He told Time Magazine in March 2021 that he was flooded with relief after cutting his hair short at age nine. But after after he began pursuing acting professionally a year later, he said he was made to grow his hair back out for the 1997 film Pit Pony.

‘I became a professional actor at the age of 10 and pursuing that passion came with a difficult compromise,’ he shared. ‘Of course I had to look a certain way.’
Puberty only made things worse for Page as he couldn’t hide behind the ‘tomboy’ label, explaining that he felt a ‘disconnection’ with his body.
‘It was total Hell, absolutely,’ he said during an April 2021 episode of The Oprah Conversation. ‘I think before puberty if you’re a tomboy, it can be somewhat accepted or dismissed.
‘But then when I got to puberty and that age, that wasn’t OK anymore. And that’s when a lot of teasing began and mostly just the beginning of just very profound discomfort in my body and disconnection from my body. And I was acting too, so going to set every day and changing into clothes that really made me feel ill.’
Matters only got worse once Page got his big break in Juno. During the 2008 awards season following Juno’s release, Page told Esquire magazine that he struggled with ‘depression, anxiety, and severe panic attacks’ and ‘could not look at a photo’ of himself on the red carpet during that time.

‘Can I relate to the suicide problem among trans people? Yeah, I can relate deeply. ‘There were moments of wanting to not be here… I would look out the window of my apartment and think, “With everything going on right now and how incredible it all is, this is how I feel? And I’m 22?” It was like, I don’t know if I could do it.’
Eventually, Page realized he couldn’t keep carrying on in his career in this state.
‘Even as an actor playing a character, it was becoming way too detrimental to my health to wear feminine clothing. I think it was hard for people to understand,’ he said. ‘I feel like I barely was existing.
‘There’s periods where I didn’t even want to leave my apartment. It was really hard for me to be social with people. Periods in my career where it felt impossible to read a script in a day. And you don’t know why and you don’t know how to express it.’

‘What I want to focus on right now, and has been so extraordinary is the degree of joy that I feel, the degree of presence that I feel, I feel a way that I really never thought possible for a long, long time,’ Page added. ‘It’s improved my life drastically,’ Page said.
As for his love life, Page is currently single, after he and his wife of three years Emma Portner filed for divorce in 2020.
Even though it was initially believed that they split up when Page came out as transgender in December 2020, they revealed that they actually had separated months prior and decided to file for divorce once Page publicly came out.
‘After much thought and careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to divorce following our separation last summer,’ they said in a statement to DailyMail.com. ‘We have the utmost respect for each other and remain close friends.’
Portner expressed her support after Page tweeted that he was transgender, writing, ‘I am so proud of @elliotpage. Trans, queer and non-binary people are a gift to this world.’

During an interview with EW, he even expressed how he felt like he needed to ‘dress down’ his performance in order for the dialogue and direction to shine.
‘There’s so much style to the dialogue, I just thought probably the most invisible I can get as an actor, the better,’ he told the outlet.
‘Because I just know from going to watch movies myself – you know, it’s like putting an outfit together. If you want the shirt to pop, you have to dress down the pants. And you can’t wear a really funky pair of shoes.’

‘I really am at this time in my life getting to know who I am and what I want. So I’d love to eventually find someone to share my life with, but if it doesn’t happen, I think I’ll be just fine.’
Since playing Juno’s mother figure in the 2007 movie, Janney has had nothing but praise for the project – and for Page.
‘Oh my God, Elliot Page – having the best time with him on that movie,’ she said when asked about some of her favorite on set memories from making Juno earlier this year.

She also praised the creative team, adding: ‘And reading the script, Diablo Cody’s script was something that just was so, it was like nothing else I’d ever read before, and I knew it when I read it, I was excited to be a part of that, and Jason Reitman, the director’s extraordinary. It was a wonderful experience I had.’
Since Juno, the actress found herself working with Page again in the 2016 film Tallulah, and it seemed like the experience was just as incredible for her the second time around.
‘Ellen is a remarkable human being. Off-camera, when I am in her presence, she is more my mother,” she told WSJ in 2016, before Elliot changed his name and came out as transgender.
The feeling seemed to be mutual for Page, who tweeted at the time: ‘Working with the genius @allisonbjanney again #imlucky @tallulahmovie.’

The actress recently made the decision to embrace her gray hair color – something she certainly doesn’t regret. She gushed: ‘I cannot tell you how amazing it is to feel free. Free from hair color and hair extensions’
‘Yeah, it was very odd and she’s very missed. Anna is missed and her character on the show is missed,’ she told E! News at the time.
Preparing for the season’s premiere in February 2021, Janney appeared on The Ellen Show and said she held no grudge over Faris’ sudden exit.
‘We’re just happy that she’s doing what she wants to do now, and we’re happy even more so that we’re able to still tell these stories about these great women in recovery,’ she told DeGeneres.
However, just a month later, the cast found out Mom had been canceled and would not get a season nine.
Janney later said she has her own theories about why it ended, explaining that she believed the show’s cancelation ‘probably’ had to with ‘money.’

‘Lupita Nyong’o was going to hand me the trophy and I reach out with one hand to take the trophy, and I reach out with the other hand to shake her hand, like we’re two dudes making a business deal, and then I realized, “Oh no, it’s Hollywood. You’re supposed to do the fake kiss on the cheek.”‘ he continued.
‘So, I kind of awkwardly go in for the fake kiss on the cheek thing, and I gave her a little of a head butt. But [thankfully] not enough to take her down.’
He has since recovered from the embarrassing moment and has continued with his impressive career.
