Bakery you've never heard of 'better than Greggs' – fans say the custard tarts are to die for | The Sun

THERE'S a bakery chain you've never heard of that's "better than greggs" according to sausage roll fans.

Sayers the Bakers was founded in Liverpool in 1912 and it now has 158 branches across the county.

Bakery chains are proving massively popular at the moment, with the likes of Greggs announcing huge expansion plans.

It's famed for its cheap sandwiches, pies, savouries and cakes.

It currently has locations across the North West and Wales.

You can use the store locator tool on the website to find your nearest outlet.

"The bakery also does some really nice breads," said another fan of the chain.

We price-checked some of the items against Greggs to see how the prices compared – some items are price matched to Greggs.

A Greggs sausage roll is priced at £1.45 and a sausage roll at Sayers is £1.75.

But ham and cheese baguette at both Greggs and Sayers is priced at £4.

The popular steak bake in Greggs is £2.35 but it's the same price at Sayers too.

The bakery chain started out as a family run business up until 1977 when it was sold to United Biscuits.

It was sold again to Warburtons in July 1990, a baking firm based in Bolton.

It was then sold off to Lyndale Foods in 1996 which collapsed into administration in June 2008.

However, Sayers was rescued from collapse in December 2019 after being bought by Karen Wood who formed a new company called Sayers and Poundbakery Limited.

Poundbakery is the chain's sister brand which operates out of 107 locations.

The sister brand is a major rival to Greggs and sells similar items for much less.

Other ways to save money on your shopping

It is always worth looking for little-known outlets and ways you can save some money on your shopping.

Too Good to Go is an app that allows you to rescue end-of-day food from many popular cafes, restaurants, shops and supermarkets that would otherwise go in the bin.

All you need to do is download and set your location on the Too Good To Go app and you can choose from nearby stores listing their unsold food at a reduced price.

Similar to Too Good To Go, you can search for nearby food to pick up based on your location through the Karma app.

You can then purchase meals at discounted prices.

However, unlike Too Good To Go, Karma will tell you what food you are getting, so there is even less chance of it going to waste.

No Waste is an excellent way to get organised, as you can scan your food and list it by expiry date, name or category.
