Britain's best pub for dogs has a library of sticks and two menus just for pets

The Bellflower in Preston won the title of the UK’s official best pub for dogs in 2022 – and the pet-friendly haven is now up for the award again.

Marking the third year running it’s been nominated, the Lancashire boozer has a range of features dedicated to man’s best friend, including a library of sticks and two menus just for dogs.

The Bellflower even hosts birthday parties for pups, serving dog-friendly beer, wine and gin at its two outdoor dog bars.

While owners enjoy pub grub and drinks at the Garstang spot, their furry companions can choose treats from an ‘A La Barke’ menu which includes sausages, burgers, and even shrimp.

Catering for dogs of all sizes with portions ranging from ‘Teacup’ to ‘Great Dane’, the Bellflower also has a separate Sunday roast menu for canines, alongside bar snacks like chicken feet and pig stouts for when they deserve an extra treat.

Or, there’s a dog stick library where pooches can swap a big stick for an even bigger stick, making it a dream destination for any good boy or girl.

Heather Porter-Brandwood, 35, general manager, said: ‘To be recognised and make it to the finalist stage again is just brilliant.

‘We have worked really hard to make sure we are inclusive for everybody including dogs.’

It’s not just for the dogs’ wellbeing either, as Heather added: ‘I always joke saying the dogs offer a little bit of staff therapy,

‘When you have had a long day, you can spend a little bit of time talking to the owners and getting some cuddles from the dogs. It is lovely,

‘It is great to see lots of wagging tails.’

As well as the many food options for visiting pets, a muddy paws station in the beer garden makes it a natural choice for dog owners.

‘The pub is really popular with dog lovers,’ said Heather, who lives in Garstang.

‘We have people who travel from across the nation to visit. We also get lots of reviews on Tripadvisor or Facebook sharing how much they love the place and what we do which is always fantastic.’

For those who aren’t fond of animals, the Bellflower’s separated dog-friendly areas mean they can enjoy their food and drink away from the barking crowd.

The pub garden’s large green area can fit up to 150 guests at its many tables, where kids can also enjoy playing on climbing frames and, in the morning, the area can be rented out to exercise your dog.

Winners for this year’s awards, hosted by Dog Friendly, will be revealed at a ceremony at Victoria Warehouse, Manchester on September 19, 2023.
