Dormeo mattress review: top quality at a bargain price

DORMEO is one of the latest mattress-in-a-box providers in a crowded field.

To see if it’s worth the hype, we gave the Octosmart Plus Mattress a go.

Pros

  • Lightweight
  • Supportive
  • Great for cold sleepers

Cons

  • Warm sleepers may need lighter sheets in summer

Dormeo mattress review: quick summary

  • Dormeo Octasmart Plus mattress, from £299.99 – buy here

Dormeo might not (yet) be one of the leading names in the mattress-in-a-box race, but we think the manufacturer is worth taking a look at.

The Italian-made, Octasmart memory foam mattress we tested was soft and supportive and provided a great night’s sleep.

Unlike some rival brands, Dormeo’s Octasmart mattresses are lightweight and thin, which means they’re easy to manoeuvre and you won’t have to buy new, deeper base sheets for your bed (something we had to do for other mattresses we’ve tested).

They’re good for sharing too: the mattress we tested was sturdy enough that the person on the other side of the bed didn’t move the mattress beneath us as we slept.

The Octasmart mattress is competitively priced; at the time of writing the double we tested is available for £399 and we think that’s great value.

With a 60-night free trial thrown in, you can rest assured you’re getting a great mattress.

Dormeo mattress review: full review

In testing, we were comparing the Dormeo Octasmart mattress against a bog-standard affair from Ikea.

Now, we’ve never had a problem with an Ikea mattress; they do the job and don’t break the bank.

But you do get what you pay for and we’d struggle to go back to our former mattress now we’ve seen what Dormeo has to offer.

Out of the box, the Dormeo Octasmart mattress we had delivered was pretty lightweight and was easy to position in our bedroom. Dormeo offers a white-glove service with all of its Octaspring mattresses, which means your new mattress will be delivered by two couriers who will take it to a room of your choosing.

Once it’s there, you simply have to stick it on your bed frame, cut open the shrink-wrap packaging and let the mattress gradually unfurl itself over three to four hours.

We liked sleeping on the mattress right away, but we found it softened up a little over the first week, and by that point, we were hooked. We found the Octasmart Plus to be somewhere between soft and medium-firm which meant that, while we did sink into the mattress when we lay on it, it still feels very supportive.

Even better, if you’re sharing the mattress, it’s firm enough that a fidgety sleeper on the other side of the bed won’t affect your peaceful slumber.

We tested the mattress over the colder winter months and found that we were warmer than usual when sleeping because of its softness. That’s great in the winter, but we reckon we’ll be reaching for a thinner blanket quite early this year when the temperature starts rising.

At Sun Selects we’ve put plenty of mattresses through their paces over the years, and one of the small drawbacks that comes with some premium mattresses is that they’re so deep you have to buy new sheets to fit them once they arrive.

However, there’s no such issue with the Dormeo Octasmart as it’s actually a little thinner than the Ikea mattress we were replacing. As an added perk, because the Octasmart is so light, it’s easier than ever for us to change our sheets; bonus!

Dormeo mattress review: the verdict

  • Dormeo Octasmart Plus mattress, from £299.99 – buy here

We were pleasantly surprised by just how much more we liked the Dormeo Octasmart Plus mattress versus our old Ikea offering.

The new mattress managed to be soft, snug and supportive and came in a small enough package that it was practical, as well as incredibly comfortable.

We’d definitely think about paying full price for the mattress if we had to, but the fact that it’s usually available at a substantial discount makes it a proper bargain.

How much are Dormeo mattresses?

In the realm of mattress-in-a-box companies, Dormeo is at the more affordable end of the spectrum.

At the time of writing, prices for a single mattress on Dormeo’s website start at £99 while a double is £250 and a king size is £309.

Offers will change often though, so it’s worth checking in at key sale times such as Black Friday if you’re looking for a bargain.
