I am a 49-year-old dad of one and I’m worried I won’t ever get another job

DEAR DEIDRE: I AM a 49-year-old dad of one and I’m worried I won’t ever get another job.

Two years ago the uni where I was high up in the IT team made me redundant.

I’ve tried to stay positive and taken courses while I’ve been off to ensure I’m up to date. I’ve had 50-plus interviews but not got past the initial stages.

My wife is trying to support me but I know she’s getting increasingly concerned, as our savings are running out.

All the while, I have had internal doubts – questioning whether I am capable of working full-time these days and increasingly if I am able to hold down a job at all.

DEIDRE SAYS: Well done for applying to so many roles and for continuing your training. It is completely natural to lose confidence after being made redundant.

It sounds like you are suffering from anxiety, which won’t help in general or specifically in your interviews. Find help via Anxiety UK (anxietyuk.org.uk, 03444 775 774).
