In a viral clip, which has so far amassed more than 880,000 views, Dr. Ellie revealed how you should be drying your toothbrush to keep it from becoming a breeding ground for bacteria
‘Here’s what I want you to do with your toothbrush every day to help you have the best oral health possible,’ she said at the beginning of the clip.
Keep those teeth clean! How to avoid making your toothbrush moldy
- Dry it for 24 hours: Place your brush somewhere with plenty of air
- Use two different toothbrushes: One you can use in the morning and the other in the evening
She explained that people know that mold can grow on a variety of surfaces, however, people often forget about toothbrushes.
‘Toothbrushes get really dirty, especially when they’re close to a toilet, in a damp climate where there is humidity, in you shower, in your bathroom, and humidity is the worst thing for growing molds.’
She shared that humidity allowed ‘harmful bacteria’ to grow inside the bristles.
Dr. Ellie revealed that there was no way you could possibly wash the bristles well enough, even if you boil them in hot water.
So, she recommended you ‘dry your toothbrush for 24 hours.’
‘Get your toothbrush, put it somewhere – in a cup or… I recommend on my website little ceramic doughnuts that hold your toothbrush so that it can air dry, has plenty of air and if your bathroom is always being used by other people, or it’s always damp, certainly don’t leave your toothbrush in your shower, take it somewhere [else],’ she explained.
‘Put it in your bedroom, put it in your kitchen, in the window where it can dry in the sunshine and use one toothbrush in the morning and a different toothbrush in the evening so that it has 24 hours before you’re going to use it again.’
Do this with your toothbrush every single day! 🪥 #toothbrush #healthyteeth #teethtok #dentistadvice #oralhealth
