A "disgusted" vegan woman has accused a supermarket of "tricking" her into eating chicken due to its placement on the freezer shelves.
The outraged shopper, who visited Australian supermarket chain Coles, took to social media to claim that chicken products had been placed in among vegan food, which led her to believe they were free from meat, according to The Mirror.
A picture of the freezer shows plant-based burgers, plant-based meatballs and vegetable dim sims, with boxes of 'I'm Free From' Chicken Nuggets and Chicken Tenders on a shelf.
However, the chicken items are free from gluten, not meat-free like the other food placed close by, 7News reports.
The shopper said she was left devastated after munching the chicken thinking it was suitable for vegans.
She asked the chain on Twitter: "Is it intentional that you put non-vegan products on the shelf between two vegan products?
"I am disgusted that you’ve just tricked me into buying & eating chicken, when we are all trying so hard to save the planet. Do you not care at all?"
A spokesperson for Coles told the news outlet that they would be investigating her claims and are committed to providing more options for vegan customers.
They said in a statement: "We have a growing number of customers choosing to purchase vegan and meat-alternative products and we are working hard to continue to expand that range to meet their demands.
"Where possible we group similar items together, but this is not always possible due to the different shelf space and layouts in our stores across our network.
"We are concerned to hear about this customer’s experience and have referred this issue to the National Grocery Space Department for their consideration."
The claims come after Aldi caused a stir with the name of its new vegan bacon recently.
The supermarket left meat-eaters reeling with anger over its name of "no pork streaky bacon rashers".
Many meat-lovers say the product, which is made from pea protein, shouldn't be called bacon.
One person vented: "Call it something else. Bacon is a cut of MEAT. Simples."
While another said: "Hi I am sorry if it is meat free then it is not bacon."
Some shoppers love it though, as one gushed: "Really enjoyed this and you get more and cheaper than the other places that do meat-free bacon!"
