During Monday’s This Morning, ITV hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield spoke with driver Lando Norris about making his F1 debut. The McLaren driver came close to winning the recent Russian Grand Prix, but in the end, he was overtaken by Lewis Hamilton who rose to victory in first place. Despite being disappointed about coming in fourth place, Lando explained to the hosts how Lewis and his fellow F1 drivers gave him advice following the race.

Phillip began by asking the F1 driver whether any of the other drivers reached out to him to share their advice and support.

“A few, I mean Lewis did,” Lando told the host.

“Obviously Lewis was the one which effectively took the race win away from me.

“Coming from Lewis as he was the one, I watched growing up, he’s Lewis a seven-time world champion.”

“And to hear what he had to say because he has been through many scenarios,” Lando continued.

“Probably even worse in some cases. But, in my way, it feels worse because it’s that first win you just want to really get.

“Many drivers said I did a good job and ‘My time will come’ which I obviously heard a lot of.

“But when it comes from someone you looked up to, then it definitely means that bit more.”

Lando also opened up to the hosts about his mental health. He explained: “I guess people, from when they just watch TV, don’t realise many things that a driver goes through.

“And it’s a bit of shame, but there are more programmes now where you get to see what the driver is like behind the scenes, and the amount of pressure and stress that they have to cope with.

“Especially at my age, coming into Formula 1 at 19, there’s a lot of eyes on you.

“So, dealing with all these kinds of things, took its toll on me.”

“Feeling like ‘I don’t know what is next if this goes wrong. If I don’t go out on the next session and perform then what is going to happen?’” he added.

“’Am I going to be in Formula One next year? If I’m not, what am I going to do?’

“I am not very good at many other things in life.”
