Strictly Come Dancing contestant Rose Ayling-Ellis is tipped to reach the 2021 final with professional dancer Giovanni Pernice. The EastEnders actress wowed the judges when she stepped onto the dance floor in week one and performed the Jive to Shake It Off by Taylor Swift. Ahead of tonight’s Halloween special, in which Rose and Giovanni will be performing the Tango to Shivers by Ed Sheeran, body language expert Judi James spoke to Express.co.uk about the couple’s chemistry and whether it is real or for the cameras.

Last week, Rose gave an emotive performance when she danced the Viennese waltz.

She was praised by the judges for her acting skills as she and Giovanni passionately fought on the dance floor.

Judi said: “This Strictly couple’s chemistry signals’ are complex and authentic.

“Complex because their body language communications involve sign language and small physical separations to ensure their messages are clear.

“Rose is not only watching Gio and the rest of the Strictly presenters and judges she is also glancing over at the sign language interpreter as well.

“Then there is the muscle memory techniques and, I’d suspect, some constant counting from Rose out there to produce the wonderful routines they are providing,” she added.

“This is all done so seamlessly that theirs is very much a ‘swan in the water’ relationship with a lot of hard work beneath the surface going into something they manage to make effortless, elegant and romantic.

“Gio has experienced something of an epiphany this season,” Judi commented.

“Known for his charm and his love of projecting some fake flirt signals on and off the floor to keep the audiences watching breathlessly, his pairing with Rose has not only shown his nurturing side as he has learned sign language and as he is often seen gazing at Rose with awe and affection, more like a proud parent, he has also found himself paired with a woman who returns his charm with banter and joke rejections.

“He looked genuinely vulnerable and shocked when Rose did some little seal-claps of delight when she found out she would be leaving him at the end of their last dance together.

“His head dropped and his eyes turned away in disbelief as he asked her ‘You’re happy to leave me?’ Only to see her clapping again.

“Rose seems to tease Gio rather than indulge in any flirting and this ‘new Gio’ is a joy to watch as we see his warmer and more caring side with Rose,” the expert continued.

“Their dances have always been good but the sparky off-floor relationship is converting to some authentically wonderful chemistry out there on the floor.

“Their jokes and banter seem to have produced some very strong signals of trust and a lack of inhibitions, making their performance signals compelling whether they are looking passionate or fiery together.

“When Giovanni planted a powerful kiss of reward and triumph on Rose’s cheek last week it looked like a moment of passion but Rose was grinning widely and despite their obvious affection for one another it looked cathartic for Gio, who was celebrating all the unseen effort from Rose to produce a near-perfect performance,” Judi explained.

“What we now have is a relationship where Rose teases Giovanni and apparently tells him off like a younger brother.

“Giovanni, meantime, seems to gaze a Rose with a parental look of intense caring, pride and affection.

“There are less tactile rituals than usual between them off the floor as Gio needs to stand back to allow Rose access to all the communication signals she is receiving.

“But even with his hands clasped politely behind his back his very softened facial expression makes it looks obvious that bonds of trust and warmth are strong between them, even if it is more of a sibling relationship,” Judi concluded.
