Variety has announced its 10 Actors to Watch for 2023. Honorees include two actors making their movie debuts in films from Oscar winners as well as thesps working with filmmakers like Martin Scorsese, Todd Haynes and Lulu Wang.
Since 1998, Variety has honored rising stars on its 10 Actors to Watch list, heralding artists who are experiencing a major breakthrough on screen. The alumni group includes more than 35 Oscar winners and nominees, including Mahershala Ali, Adam Driver, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer and Lupita Nyong’o.
This year’s honorees will be profiled later in the year in an issue of Variety.
Nicholas Galitzine
The actor can currently be seen in Amazon Prime Video’s “Red, White & Royal Blue” and the comedy “Bottoms.” Upcoming projects include “The Idea of You” with Anne Hathaway and the limited series “Mary & George” opposite Julianne Moore.
Myha’la Herrold
Known for her work on the HBO series “Industry,” Herrold will be seen in September’s “Dumb Money.” In December, she stars in “Leave the World Behind” opposite Julia Roberts and Mahershala Ali.
Archie Madekwe
Madekwe can currently be seen in “Gran Turismo.” Earlier this year he reunited with “Midsommar” director Ari Aster’s “Beau Is Afraid” and will next be seen in “Saltburn.”
Charles Melton
Recently seen on “Poker Face,” the actor plays a pivotal role in the new Todd Haynes film “May December,” opposite Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman.
Cara Jade Myers
Previously seen on “This Is Us” and “Rutherford Falls,” Myers has a breakthrough role in Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” opposite Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro and Lily Gladstone.
Alison Oliver
After appearing in the limited series “Conversations With Friends,” Oliver is making her film debut in Oscar winner Emerald Fennell’s “Saltburn.” She will also appear in “The Order” opposite Jude Law and Nicholas Hoult.
Aaron Pierre
Previously seen in Barry Jenkins’ “The Underground Railroad” and “Brother,” the actor will next be seen in “Foe” opposite Paul Mescal and Saoirse Ronan this fall. Next year, he will lead the upcoming thriller “Rebel Ridge,” play freedom fighter Malcolm X in “Genius: MLK/X,” and reunite with Jenkins to voice Mufasa in “Mufasa: The Lion King.”
Dominic Sessa
Currently a student at Carnegie Mellon School of Drama, the actor makes his movie debut opposite Paul Giamatti in “The Holdovers,” the latest film from two-time Oscar winner Alexander Payne.
Teyana Taylor
Already an established musical artist, Taylor earned acclaim for her performance as a single mother committed to making a future for her son in Sundance’s Grand Jury Prize winner “A Thousand and One.” She will next be seen in “The Book of Clarence” opposite Benedict Cumberbatch and Alfre Woodard.
Ji-young Yoo
The actor won the Best Performance Award in U.S. narrative category at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival for her role as a Korean American teen in “Smoking Tigers.” She will star as a co-lead in the upcoming Amazon limited series “Expats” opposite Nicole Kidman for director Lulu Wang and will be seen opposite Pedro Pascal and Jay Ellis in “Freaky Tales.”
