Darts star throws ‘worst leg ever seen at Ally Pally’ – but still wins the match

Niels Zonneveld has thrown 'one of the worst ever legs seen at the Ally Pally' in the Paddy Power PDC World Championship – but he still managed to win his first round encounter with Darren Webster.

Zonneveld's opening leg of his third set with Webster saw the Dutchman average just 38. And after 21 darts he left the oche with 235 on the board and a highest return of 59.

The Dutchman, however, rallied, and despite not being at his best – he managed to make his way to the second round. And, in doing so, he became the sixth player to win a World Champion Last 96 clash with an average of under 80.

"Possibly one of the worst legs ever seen at Ally Pally," one fan joked. While a second replied: "Got to be the worst leg of darts I’ve seen before on TV!"

"My head hurts watching that. I don’t get how you get to play at the highest level and drop a stinker like that," a third said. And another added: "That Niels Zonneveld vs Darren Webster is possibly one of the worst, yet entertaining matches of darts I’ve ever witnessed!"

Speaking after the game, he joked: "I was struggling with that first set. You keep reading everywhere 'he hasn't won a set yet', but when I got to 1-0 and 2-0, I thought I was going to win.

"But I just fell silent and in the end I thought: there will be a fifth set, but luckily he also missed everything. I am very happy."

Zonneveld has now marched into the second round, and he will face Ross Smith at the Ally Pally.
