Former Jackson State kicker Alejandro Mata transferring to CU Buffs

Colorado has one of the best kickers in the Pac-12 with Cole Becker.

The Buffaloes are adding some competition to the room, however.

On Tuesday night, former Jackson State kicker Alejandro Mata announced he is transferring to CU. Mata is following former JSU head coach and new Buffs head coach Deion Sanders to Boulder.

As a true freshman this season at Jackson State, Mata made 12-of-13 field goals, with a long of 38 yards, and 51-of-52 extra points. Both of his misses were blocked. He did not handle kickoff duties for the Tigers.

At CU, Mata will be reunited with a pair of high school teammates, running Victor Venn and linebacker Aubrey Smith, who were true freshmen with the Buffs this year. All three helped Buford (Ga.) High School win state titles in 2020 and 2021.

Mata earned all-county and all-state honors as a senior at Buford, going 9-for-13 on field goals and 60-of-63 on extra points.

Adding Mata gives the Buffs two projected scholarship kickers for next season.

Becker, a sophomore, was one of the few bright spots for CU this year, as he went 11-of-13 on field goals, with a long of 49, and 20-of-21 on extra points. He also had only seven of 43 kickoffs returned, with 34 going into the end zone for touchdowns.

In two seasons at CU, Becker is 25-of-33 on field goals and 45-of-46 on extra points. His career long field goal is 56 yards.
