Frankie Dettori poses with wife Catherine on holiday as row erupts after he loses appeal against big Royal Ascot ban | The Sun

FRANKIE DETTORI posed with wife Catherine as they enjoyed a holiday after his Royal Ascot heroics.

But the smile might soon be disappearing after it emerged Dettori had lost his appeal against a big nine-day ban.

Former champion jockey Seb Sanders was one of those hitting out at the 'bizarre' suspension which will rule Dettori out of the big ride on Coral-Eclipse favourite Emily Upjohn.

Dettori was banned for careless riding aboard King Charles' horse Saga in the Wolferton Stakes.

He warned he was getting his lawyers on the case as he wanted the ban overturned to ride the big favourite at Sandown on Saturday week.

But his appeal was dismissed today after a three-and-a-half hour grilling on the mid-race incident.

It was ruled Dettori moved right, thereby cutting up James McDonald on Cadillac, when he shouldn't have and that the move was 'careless'.

The ban put a sour note on Dettori's final ever Royal meeting – even though he landed his ninth Gold Cup on Courage Mon Ami.

Sky Sports Racing host Sanders was one of those hitting out at Dettori's ban – the second of the week.

Legendary horse trainer famed for huge Cheltenham gambles dies aged 99

"They were going very fast, into a bottleneck, a horse kicked up his inside and all of a sudden the pace dropped – what's he meant to do?

"I really don't know what he did.

"I watched the race several times, his body langauge is not for a nine-day suspension. Oh, come on. No!

"You need people in there to be able to read the race properly.

"It was never a nine-day ban when I first saw it and after watching it several times it's still not a nine-day ban. It's bizarre."
