The Mountain West Conference followed in the footsteps of multiple Power 5 counterparts Friday, announcing teams that are unable to play due to COVID-19 issues this season will be forced to forfeit.
If both teams are experiencing COVID-19 issues, then the game will be declared a no contest, per the league’s COVID policy. There will be no minimum roster thresholds to compete.
The conference said it would continue reviewing provisions made by the Director of Athletics and the Health & Safety Advisory Committee throughout the year. The updated policy applies to all sponsored conference sports.
Forfeited conference games will be recorded as a loss for the team unable to compete, and as a win for the opponent in the MW standings. Per the NCAA, this does not change an institution’s official won-lost record.
Mountain West championship contests will be viewed on a case-by-case basis.
