All Creatures Great and Small will be returning to Channel 5 for its highly anticipated season two Christmas special which promises more endearing tales from the heart of the Yorkshire Dales. Ahead of the festive special airing, Anna Madeley who plays Mrs Hall teased a special reunion with her estranged son Edward. So will he be appearing on her doorstep bearing gifts?
In the special Channel 5 episode, viewers are set to see Mrs Hall and Gerald Hammond (played by Will Thorp) grow closer.
Anna, who plays the show’s live-in housekeeper Mrs Hall, said Christmas can be a “funny time” where you often think about who you’re with and who you’re missing.
She explained: “I think Mrs Hall has that feeling with her son, Edward, as she would like him to be there.
“But having a new friend there for her in Gerald is a great thing and she allows herself to look forward to the New Year.”
“Mrs Hall also has a want to invite anyone who doesn’t have someone to spend Christmas with, and I love that about her.
“To Mrs Hall, Christmas is a day that you should have company and be looked after, you can’t be spending it alone – she wants everyone to have a wonderful day together.”
After the events of the past two years, Anna said she hopes that this will resonate with many Channel 5 viewers.
She said: “I think after these recently challenging times, we all now recognise the joy of just being able to sit and have a meal together, now it feels even more special to be able to do that.
“Being able to be with your family and friends and share food, it’s a ritual as human beings that we love, and I think we are all appreciative of that.”
Unbeknownst to Mrs Hall though, there’s a chance that she won’t be making Christmas lunch for everyone this year.
When asked how her character would feel about that Anna replied: “Outraged! I think her assumption would be that everyone would come to Skeldale for Christmas lunch.
“The idea that people might want to go off and do different things probably wouldn’t dawn on her.
“The reasons for people thinking that way are very valid, and I think she would understand them, but in her excitement, she wants to feed everyone and have them all there at Skeldale.”
When questioned on who Mrs Hall would like to spend Christmas with the most, Anna revealed: “I think she’d like Edward to come to lunch, and I also think she’d like some new bath salts, after someone used all of hers earlier in series two!”
So will Mrs Hall and her son be reunited for Christmas? Will Edward end up visiting his mother more regularly if their festive day goes well?
While viewers don’t yet know how Mrs Hall became distanced from her son, a reunion may bring the reason to light.
During the special episode, fans can expect to see a newly engaged Helen Herriot (Rachel Shenton) and James Herriot (Nicholas Ralph) realise they haven’t agreed on where to spend Christmas Day.
Mrs Hall is expecting them at Skeldale and Helen’s younger sister Jenny Alderson (Imogen Clawson) at Heston Grange, and the pair are reluctant to disappoint either of them.
The situation raises bigger questions about what their lives will look like in the future.
All Creatures Great and Small’s Christmas special airs on Christmas Eve on Channel 5, at 9pm.
