Netflix released yet another hugely popular K-drama at the end of last month following the whirlwind success of the thrilling first season of Squid Game. However, responses to All Of Us Are Dead have proven to be much more mixed, thanks, in part, to the actions of wealthy class bully Lee Na-yeon.

Actress Yoo-mi has defended the actions of her All Of Us Are Dead character following considerable backlash to the new South Korean series.

Previously known as Ji-yeong (Number 240) in Netflix’s breakout hit Squid Game, she joins an ensemble cast as a group of students whose school is overrun by a zombie outbreak.

Throughout the series, Na-yeon is revealed to be a wealthy and self-centred teen who will stoop to anything to ensure her survival.

This even extends to purposefully killing one of her classmates when he’s scratched by a zombie to ensure he doesn’t turn and wreak havoc on the school.

However, Yoo-mi has claimed some of her actions are justified due to the show’s high-pressure scenario.

She explained: “She has no choice but to be in a rush because she has to survive.

“Her desire to live was just expressed in a different way.”

The actress previously caught international attention for a completely different character in Squid Game.

During the show’s pivotal round of marbles, her character Ji-yeong throws the game to ensure her opponent Kang Sae-byeok (HoYeon Jung) survives.

In All Of Us Are Dead, however, she acts in her own best interests and sacrifices others so she can live as long as possible.

“Na-yeon does what she can because she’s human,” Yoo-mi continued.

“That’s why I think people feel pity [for her]. If she’s really mean, that means I acted well, right?”

Her co-star Yoo Chan-young added: “Although Na-yeon’s personality is a bit off, she doesn’t say anything that isn’t true. In real life, you need someone like that.”

By the end of the series, Na-yeon starts to feel remorse for her fellow students and even begins to regret killing Gyeong-su (Ham Sung-min).

After ostracising herself from her less-privileged classmates, whom she refers as ‘welfies’, she realises how lonely her life in the apocalypse is going to be.

Netflix has yet to renew All Of Us Are Dead for a second season, so it remains to be seen if Na-yeon will ever redeem herself from her past actions.

As the show’s webtoon source material has come to an end, the zombie drama could very well be a one-and-done miniseries, though fans are still hungry for more.

Although the series wasn’t as much of a smash hit in the USA, it has become the number one show in other countries, and a cliffhanger ending could hint at a follow-up.

Thankfully, since the massive success of Squid Game and other series, there’ll be no shortage of new K-dramas coming subscribers’ way in the next year.

All Of Us Are Dead is available to stream on Netflix.
