George (played by Tony Maudsley) is the friendly undertaker of Weatherfield and largely keeps himself to himself. But in recent Coronation Street scenes, he opened up to Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce) that he hadn’t always been a good person. While trying to comfort the troublemaker on the ITV soap, he admitted he had messed up before but was eventually forgiven. Could the harmless character have been a criminal earlier in his life?
Todd’s lies have finally been exposed, with Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank) and Summer Spellman (Harriet Bibby) left heartbroken by his deceit.
But while confiding in George, the two had an honest conversation.
“I can see you’re in pain,” George told Todd. “You love your mum, you love Billy and Summer – you might have just lost them all.”
Todd replied: “Billy hates me. My mum won’t let me in the house. Summer… she can’t even look at me. I’ve got nothing. “
George then admitted some secrets of his past, replying: “It might surprise you to know that I wasn’t always the upstanding gem you see here before you.”
Todd looked surprised as George explained: “I messed up. Big time, in my past.
“But I worked hard and eventually – and with some graft, I was forgiven.” But what could George have been referring to?
The undertaker arrived in Coronation Street in 2020 after he had previously only been mentioned by Mary Taylor (Patti Clare).
Since then, he has grown close to Eileen Grimshaw (Sue Cleaver) and gave her son Todd a job at the company.
It makes sense that he doesn’t speak much about his history if he isn’t proud of it, could he have been a con artist?
It’s possible that he sees himself in Todd, which explains why he constantly seems to give him second chances.
Todd is manipulative and lies to people around him, and George claimed he had also made big mistakes and had to work hard to be forgiven.
It’s likely that he used to engage in criminal activity and had to earn peoples’ trust after a stint in prison.
He possibly used to cheat people out of their money instead of working, taking on similar schemes to Todd to earn some fast cash.
But now that he’s told Todd, will his secret remain under wraps? Todd often uses peoples’ secrets to his own advantage and may try to make himself appear better by digging into George’s past and exposing his criminal history.
As Todd considered running away, he said: “I can’t stay around here, it’s not as if anyone’s going to miss me.”
“Can you blame them?” George asked. He continued: “Is it true then? Is it true you used my van for robbing stuff?”
“Yes,” Todd replied. “Everything you’ve heard about me, unless it’s something good, is true.”
“You’ve really messed up – you’ve hurt a lot of people,” George remarked.
Todd snapped: “Thanks for the update, but I’ve heard it from enough people today so if I could just have my wages then I won’t darken your door again.”
But after revealing that he himself had a messy past, he urged Todd to stay in Weatherfield.
“You can either take this and run away, or you can stay and work really hard to make amends with the people you’ve wounded,” he advised.
“What more can I do? I’ve said I’m sorry,” Todd went on, before George answered: “Stop saying it, and start showing it.”
His wise words might convince Todd to stick around, but that doesn’t mean he won’t betray him.
Todd is usually one to bring others down for his own gain, and it’s likely he might try to ruin George’s reputation.
He might even blackmail his boss if he finds out the details of what he has done.
George is now a respected business owner, so if Todd finds out he used to lie and con people, Todd will definitely be able to use this to his advantage.
He may even try to warn his mother Eileen to stay away from George in an effort to get back in her good books.
Will George regret opening up to Todd? Or will his words change the scheming resident for good?
