EastEnders Lola actress addresses romance rumours with former on-screen husband

Eastenders star Danielle Harold has finally addressed the rumours of a potential romantic relationship with on-screen husband Jamie Borthwick.

Danielle left the BBC soap in dramatic scenes earlier this year after her character Lola Pearce tragically succumbed to a brain tumour. She had played the role of Lola on Albert Square since 2011.

Co-star Jamie Borthwick took on the role of Lola's grieving widower Jay Brown after Lola passed away. But fans have been convinced the pair have been secretly together once the cameras stopped rolling.

The theory was only furthered after the pair filmed Lola's emotional final scenes together. But despite the fan speculation, actor Danielle has not confirmed nor denied the rumours.

Now, Danielle has spoken out on the theories posed by fans, admitting that she finds the question hilarious. She joked: "I’m just going to leave that one out there, because it’s too funny.

"It makes me laugh so much, I’d hate to squash it! I always say Jamie is the husband I never wanted or asked for, but nonetheless got," she continued.

Danielle added that whilst she has just left the soap, she has no time for romance as her schedule is regularly jammed with other work commitments. However, despite her rapidly busy schedule, she remains close friends with her mates from the Square.

She added that even though she left the show months previously, she still speaks to her co-stars every day thanks to a WhatsApp group chat with her on-screen family, the Mitchells.

"We are a family," she said. "In a way, it's like I never left, because we talk all the time!" Harold confessed that it was hard to let go of the character, after BBC bosses told her that Lola was being killed off from the soap. She explained that people had connected with her, which made her departure all the more heart-breaking.

"It was sad to see her go, but I loved the way we dived into her backstory over the last year and a half, saw parts of her family history and got to know her so well," Danielle lamented. "It meant that we’d rounded her off in a really lovely way.

"I’m going to miss her, though. She’s been so fun to play, as she was always up to some sort of mischief. It's nice to be a bit naughty like that and she certainly kept me on my toes!"
