During the hour-long Netflix show, Jimmy discusses a number of topics ranging from the coronavirus pandemic to the Black Lives Matter movement. However, many viewers were left outraged by some of the comedian’s jokes about the traveller community.

A clip of Jimmy’s show has been widely shared on social media, which shows him joke about the genocide of Jewish people and travellers.

Before Jimmy had even told the punchline of his joke, he warned the audience: “Strap in everyone, you ready?”

The comedian continued: “When people talk about the Holocaust, they talk about the tragedy and horror of six million Jewish lives being lost to the Nazi war machine.

“But they never mention the thousands of gypsies that were killed by the Nazis.”

He added: “No one ever talks about that because no one wants to talk about the positives.”

At the beginning of the show, Jimmy also issued a “trigger warning” to the audience as he admitted his routine contained “terrible things”.

He said: “Before we start, a quick trigger warning, tonight’s show contains jokes about terrible things.

“Terrible things that may have affected you and the people that you love.”

“But these are just jokes, they’re not terrible the things,” the comedian explained.

“There’s a huge difference between doing a joke about a rape…and doing a rape.”

Jimmy’s joke has sparked outrage on social media, with many fans slamming the Eight Out of 10 Cats presenter.

Writing on Twitter, Das raged: “Jimmy Carr needs to get in the bin and stay there. Forever. Awful.”

Becki added: “So @NetflixUK what have you got to say about Jimmy Carr’s vile anti-Romani racism on your platform?? Are you standing by this?”

User Malibu tweeted: “I honestly wish I hadn’t looked into the Jimmy Carr thing. I just feel sick to my stomach now.”

“The Jimmy Carr ‘joke’ is despicable and no excuse for it but what makes it so much worse is the amount of claps and high volume of laughter,” Linda wrote. “It’s sickening.”

While James simply labelled a clip of the joke: “Truly disturbing.”

Despite the backlash, some of Jimmy’s fans did step in to defend the comedian with Sam tweeting: “Can’t lie, that Jimmy Carr gypsy/traveller joke is funny.” (sic)

Norman added: “Oh no! Jimmy Carr told a naughty joke! Why are you all so soft? He wasn’t serious you know??” (sic)

“Fan outrage aimed at Jimmy Carr because of a JOKE he made on his Netflix special which came out over Christmas. You know he’s a comedian known for his dark humour, right?” James pointed out.

Express.co.uk has approached Netflix and Jimmy Carr’s representative for comment.

His Dark Material is streaming on Netflix now.
