Gilmore Girls fans, remember when Rory Gilmore said, “I’ve seen a lot of butts today”? Apparently, that was somewhat true. During season 3, Alexis Bledel filmed scenes taking place in a hospital, where her character commented on the way-too-revealing hospital gowns. As Gilmore Girls Key Set Costumer Valerie Campbell recently revealed on social media, the comment inspired a crew member to play a disturbing yet hilarious prank on Bledel.
Rory Gilmore experienced the maternity ward in ‘Gilmore Girls’ Season 3
In Gilmore Girls Season 3 Episode 13, “Dear Emily and Richard,” Rory visited the hospital where Sherry Tinsdale (Mädchen Amick) would give birth to baby GiGi with Christopher Hayden (David Sutcliffe). Much to Rory’s dismay, the high school student was left stranded with Sherry, as all of Sherry’s friends had to leave for work.
At first, Rory tried to power through the awkward experience. However, she gave in to the stress and called Lorelai (Lauren Graham) for help.
“I’m here all by myself, and I’m trying to be calm, but I’m starting to feel nauseous,” she said. “And the hospital has a smell, and there are noises, and those gowns do not stay closed, and I’ve seen a lot of butts today!”
When the phone call ended, Rory looked up to cringe at one more bare backside walking past her.
A ‘Gilmore Girls’ crew member played a disturbing prank on Alexis Bledel while filming the episode
According to Campbell, Bledel received quite a surprise during one take of the phone call scene. In a TikTok video, the costumer explained that a Gilmore Girls production assistant (PA) decided to prank Bledel by replacing the extra walking past her at the end of the scene with his butt exposed.
“One of our favorite PAs, Danny, dressed in nothing but a hospital gown and walked straight in front of Alexis. It was either the first take or the last take. But boy, was that image burned in her mind,” Campbell said. In a comment, she later added, “It was funny since he was a beloved member of the crew. But [Alexis] was definitely shocked.”
While that particular take didn’t make it into the show, Campbell said the crew caught it on film. That’s certainly one way to capture a genuine reaction.
Alexis Bledel has opened up about ‘humiliating’ moments on set
Bledel has yet to mention the prank in any interviews, so it hopefully didn’t scar the Gilmore Girls actor too much. However, she has spoken out about some other embarrassing moments on set. In a May 2021 interview on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, Bledel admitted that one of her costumes was “really annoying.”
“I was really annoyed when they put me in a silly costume for a town event,” she explained. “That was humiliating.”
All episodes of Gilmore Girls are now streaming on Netflix.
