'Gilmore Girls': Emily Gilmore Called Luke and Lorelai's Relationship in Season 1

Gilmore Girls fans largely agree that Luke Danes and Lorelai Gilmore were meant to be. Showrunner, Amy Sherman-Palladino, insisted the romance storyline came about organically. That might be so. Still, it is clear that she had a vision for the couple’s love from pretty early on in the series. Fans think Sherman-Palladino foreshadowed their relationship in episode 2. More foreshadowing came about further along in season 1. Emily Gilmore mentioned a potential connection between them multiple times during the show’s inaugural season.

Emily Gilmore realized Luke was interested in Lorelai the first time she met him

Lorelai and Luke might have been fooling themselves about their romantic interest in each other, but they weren’t getting it past Emily. Upon her first visit to Stars Hollow, Emily noticed that Luke was into Lorelai and immediately called her on it. In fact, she was so sure that they were an item that she didn’t even question it. She simply asked Lorelai how long she had been seeing Luke.

The interaction at Rory’s birthday party was not the first time fans noticed Lorelai and Luke might eventually be an item, though. That happened way back in the show’s second episode. Still, it was the first time someone in Lorelai’s life was so direct about a possible romance.

Emily called Luke out on his feelings for Lorelai in a hospital waiting room

Emily wasn’t satisfied with her interaction with Lorelai about Luke. A bit later on in the season, Emily approached Luke about his potential interest in Lorelai. In the episode “Forgiveness and Stuff,” Emily outright asked Luke what was going on between him and Lorelai. He insisted that they were just friends, to which Emily replied that they were both idiots.

Emily might have been the only person who saw the duo together that was not only brave enough to ask the question but outspoken enough to call them out on their lying. It was clear from very early on that they were interested in each other. They were too afraid to say it, though.

Emily finally confronted Lorelai about her feelings in season 1 of ‘Gilmore Girls’

Emily wasn’t satisfied simply questioning both Luke and Lorelai about their relationship. In the fourteenth episode of season 1, Emily once again cornered Lorelai about her interest in Luke. When Lorelai finally admitted that she could potentially have feelings for him, she wasn’t pleased. Emily thanked her and asked her exactly what she was thinking.

Gilmore Girls fans point out that her reaction in the episode “That Damn Donna Reed” was indicative of her overall feelings about Lorelai getting serious with Luke. While Luke was a nice guy, he wasn’t exactly what Emily ever envisioned for Lorelai. She likely still prefers the idea of Lorelai with Christopher Hayden.
