Gyles Brandreth is well known for having brushed shoulders with a wide range of famous faces over the years. The writer and broadcaster was welcomed onto ITV’s Love Your Weekend with Alan Titchmarsh on Sunday morning and recalled an encounter he had with the late James Bond star Roger Moore.
Chatting to host Alan and fellow guest Dame Maureen Lipman, Gyles revealed his connection to the iconic Bond actor.
The presenter asked: “I’m told you both have impressions, that you can both do impressions of people you either have worked with or met.
“Who’s yours? Who are you?” Alan asked Gyles.
Gyles replied: “Who would I do an impression of? When I was young I wanted to be Roger Moore.”
He confessed he once met the actor when he was younger and asked for some acting tips.
Gyles explained: “When I met Roger Moore I said to him ‘I’ve always wanted to be you.’
“He looked down at me with his great height and said ‘Really?’
“I said ‘I have. But you’re always so self-deprecating. You say you only ever offer the camera two looks. One is the left eyebrow, the other is the right eyebrow. If it’s that easy Roger, will you teach me?’
“He gave it a go, he tried to teach me how to raise my eyebrows. I managed to get the left eyebrow up quite a bit,” he revealed.
“As you can see there’s a touch of Roger Moore there,” Gyles remarked, while imitating Roger’s famous facial expression.
However, Gyles confessed he soon came across a problem with his acting.
He confessed that no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t raise his right eyebrow and so returned to Roger for help.
Gyles continued: “I said to him eventually ‘Roger, I’ve got my left eyebrow but I can’t get the right eyebrow. What’s going wrong?’.
“He said, ‘It’s very simple Gyles, it seems you’re half the actor I am’,” he revealed.
“Oh gosh,” Maureen said, as Alan burst out laughing over Gyles’ anecdote.
Alan confessed in the past he’d heard comical rumours about Roger’s acting in the Bond films.
The presenter said: “I always remember them saying in Bond he was terrible when he fired a gun because he always blinked.
“They had to cut away from him whenever he fired a gun,” Alan laughed.
Love Your Weekend with Alan Titchmarsh airs Sundays at 10am on ITV.
