What happened to El Chapo in the ‘Narcos: Mexico’ Season 3 finale?

In season 3, fans witnessed the arrest of El Chapo in 1993. The drug lord planned to seize control over the entire prison with the help of Ernesto “Don Neto” Fonseca Carrillo (Joaquín Cosío). While incarcerated, El Chapo realized he could take over the Sinaloa cartel. He betrayed his partner, Don Neto, and cartel leader Héctor Luis Palma Salazar (Gorka Lasaosa) and sent them to a different prison. In the end, El Chapo has control over the inmates and the police officers in jail.

How does the ending set up a possible spinoff?

El Chapo’s final scene shows him having a conjugal visit with El Mayo (Alberto Guerra). Mayo thinks it’s time for the drug lord to “rethink his living arrangement.” This line refers to El Chapo’s escape from prison in 2001. Per Newsweek, he evades police custody until 2014. During that time, he was the leader of the Sinaloa cartel. Ultimately, El Chapo managed to escape prison for a second time in 2015. Authorities recaptured the drug lord and sentenced him to life imprisonment. Since then, he has remained in jail.

‘Narcos: Mexico’ showrunner weighs in on the possibility of a spinoff series

Many fans theorized that the Narcos universe could continue with El Capo’s life story. Perhaps, the spinoff series could focus on him becoming the Sinaloa cartel leader. Or, it could give a glimpse into his escape from prison. So, is there an El Chapo spinoff in the works?

Well, Narcos: Mexico fans might be disappointed to hear there is nothing in the works. In an interview with Newsweek, Narcos: Mexico showrunner Carlo Bernard explained the ending does not set up a possible spinoff. “Well, I think it was trying to, it’s not so much setting up another spinoff which there are no plans for, it’s more just trying to capture an ending that felt emotionally real, a sense that these stories don’t end entirely,” he explained.

“We know the stories that these people are based on continuing, so it was trying to find moments where the story could be resolved satisfyingly. But you’re still speaking to the larger reality that is, of course, the narrative continues beyond the frame of this season,” Bernard continued. “So, it was just about balance, finding some resolution but implying that obviously, the story continues.”

Narcos: Mexico Season 3 is streaming now on Netflix.
