Ant and Dec have overseen several terrifying trials on this year’s series of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! The ITV reality show sees celebrities take on gruesome tasks in a bid to earn food for their campmates. Reflecting on his time on the show back in 2016, Homes Under the Hammer star Martin Roberts has confessed he made a “huge error” related to the trials before setting foot in the camp.
Martin starred in the 2016 series of I’m A Celebrity and came in sixth place after spending 15 days in the Australian jungle.
The Homes Under the Hammer star undertook a variety of trials during his time on the show but named his drinking challenge as one of the worst.
In an exclusive interview with Express.co.uk, Martin opened up about his time on I’m A Celeb.
The star remarked: “The challenges were always a challenge, you know.
“They give you a chat with a psychologist to check you’re okay to do the show before you go in.
“I made the huge error of saying that I did have a few issues with claustrophobia and her parting words as I left the therapy room were ‘Good luck with that one then.’
“In fact, the first trial I got to do was when I was buried in a coffin and covered in snakes.
“So, you know, don’t ever tell the I’m A Celebrity psychologist your deepest fears because you’ll end up doing exactly that as your first trial.
“That would be my advice to anyone who ever goes in!” Martin exclaimed.
However, the presenter revealed claustrophobia wasn’t his only challenge in the jungle as the eating trials were also a struggle.
Martin confessed drinking a “cockroach smoothie” was a memorable challenge for him.
He laughed: “You just Google cockroach smoothie and Martin Roberts and you can see what happened.
“That was my nemesis,” the Homes Under the Hammer star added.
“I always knew that the eating trials, and I think most people would agree, are the hardest.
“You can be brave when you’re dangling off a cliff edge or you can be brave if you’re putting your hand in a box full of snakes or spiders.
“I’m not particularly bothered about snakes or spiders or any creepy crawlies really.
“But, you can’t fight a gag reflex when you’re being made to drink squashed flies and squished cockroaches as I did,” he explained.
This year’s series of I’m A Celebrity has seen the contestants take on similar challenges with music producer Naughty Boy and singer Frankie Bridge enduring a drinking challenge.
Meanwhile, Arlene Phillips and Kadeena Cox have become the first two stars to be voted off the series this year.
I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! Continues Tuesday at 9pm on ITV.
