Lizzie McGuire stars 20 years on – drug arrest, career U-turn and untimely death

Disney show Lizzie McGuire was a massive part of tween girls' lives across the globe in the noughties and the character still lives in fans hearts even now.

The awkward high schooler was there to make everyone at home feel at ease about their daily dramas because they couldn't be any more embarrassing or dramatic than the main character Lizzie's.

The series kicked off in January 2001 and some of the stars went on to great things, whereas others weren't so lucky.

From a tragic death from diabetes to killing someone while under the influence, let's take a closer look…

Hilary Duff as Lizzie McGuire

Hilary Duff, 34, has remained the biggest name out of the cast of the Lizzie McGuire series.

After the programme ended in 2004, she went on to have a successful music career and released multiple albums.

Her acting career didn't stop either and she racked up an impressive set of TV and film appearances, most recently, she's starred as Kelsey Peters on Younger.

Since the show, she dated a series of famous faces including Good Charlotte singer Joel Madden who was ten years her senior, fellow teen star Aaron Carter and her current partner Matthew Koma.

Hilary has three children, including Luca, 9, Banks, 3, and Mae, who is one.

Her oldest child is from her previous marriage to Canadian hockey star Mike Comrie while her youngest children are from her current marriage with singer-songwriter Mike.

Jake Thomas as Matt McGuire

After the series, Jake, 31, continued with his acting career as well as dabbling with some other media industry work such as screenwriting, directing, and photography.

His impressive photography portfolio includes some well-known American YouTubers, like the Merrell twins and Jay Versace.

He's also starred in TV series like Storytellers, S.W.A.T., NCIS, Criminal Minds, and The Secret Life of an American Teenager.

Lalaine Vergara-Paras as Miranda Sanchez

Lalaine, 34, got into a bit of trouble after her Disney days came to an end and went through an admitted rough patch.

In 2007, the child star former Disney starlet pleaded guilty after being arrested and charged for methamphetamine possession.

This served as a wake-up call for the star and she completed a drug treatment programme and later had her charge expunged from her criminal record.

Opening up to HuffPost about that time in her life, Laline said she had been through some "dark years" and the arrest was a necessary "slap in the face" for her.

In the interview from 2015, she explained how she had been on the more "relaxed side of things".

She told the publication: "I hold a job down to pay the bills, and I've been doing all these random little projects," which most recently included an appearance in the short film The Man with the Red Balloon.

Adam Lamberg as David "Gordo" Gordon

Since the early noughties, Adam, 37, has stepped out of the spotlight and maintained a low profile on social media.

The actor appeared in a few independent movies every now and then, later deciding to go to college at UC Berkeley.

He then worked at the Irish Arts Center in New York before returning for the now-cancelled Lizzie McGuire reboot.

Hallie Todd as Jo McGuire

Hallie, 60, began writing and producing as well as carrying on her acting career.

She often works with her husband and American director Glenn Withrow and her daughter Ivy.

Most recently, Halle starred in The Last Champion, a film that she co-wrote and co-produced alongside her talented family. She was also set to return for the hotly-anticipated Lizzie McGuire reboot.

Robert Carradine as Sam McGuire

Before Lizzie McGuire, he starred in the 1980s movie Revenge of the Nerds and jumping to 2013, he and costar Curtis Armstrong hosted King of the Nerds on TBS.

Later on, he dabbled in reality TV by appearing in an episode of Celebrity Wife Swap along with NFL Hall of Famer Terrell Owens.

By looking at his social media it seems that Robert enjoys relaxing with his showbiz friends and having the occasional smoke.

Phill Lewis as Principal Tweedy

Disney Channel fave Phill, 53, went on to star in The Suite Life of Zack, Scrubs, Bunk'd and loads more.

However, he actually did some time behind bars in his younger days after he fatally struck a 21-year-old Portuguese nanny called Isabel Duart.

The victim died of the injuries she sustained from the incident which took place when Phill was 24 years old.

His blood-alcohol levels were three times the legal limit and Phil was convicted of a DUI and manslaughter with a motor vehicle in 1993 and served five years in prison.

However, by the 2000s, it seemed that everyone had put Phill's dark past behind him and he still gets offered TV and film credits now.

Daniel Escobar as Mr. Escobar

Daniel Escobar, who played the teacher, Mr Escobar, died at the age of 49 in 2013.

According to reports, Daniel suffered from complications of diabetes and the cause of death was cited as heart failure, which is a common result of the illness.

Daniel had also had a heart attack the year before and was dealing with kidney failure due to this diabetes.
