'Locke & Key' Season 2 Delivers a Disturbing Revelation About the Keys

Locke & Key Season 2 has officially arrived on Netflix, and the new episodes are delivering revelations about the magic of Keyhouse. Although they’ve been through one adventure with the keys, the Locke siblings have a lot to learn about them. As Bode (Jackson Robert Scott) puts it during the trailer, there’s plenty they don’t understand about their family home. And the second season delivers a disturbing revelation about the keys that could prove important later on.

New keys are made in ‘Locke & Key’ Season 2

Locke & Key Season 2 focuses heavily on the creation of new keys, mostly because Gabe (Griffin Gluck) wants to make one to produce more demons. Unfortunately for the Lockes, he succeeds in that endeavor. Of course, that’s mostly thanks to the fact that Duncan (Aaron Ashmore) has the power to forge them.

And while those keys can be used for good or evil, digging into the history of their magic reveals something disturbing about their origins. As it turns out, the material used to make the keys isn’t of this world. Because of that, they may not belong in it.

The Locke siblings learn a disturbing fact about the keys

Early on in Locke & Key‘s second season, the Locke siblings learn that the keys are made from the same substance as demons. The Whispering Iron that hit Eden (Hallea Jones) in season 1 could just as easily have been turned into a magical key. In fact, that’s exactly what the group uses to create Gabe’s Demon Key — and the Alpha Key that later destroys him.

The family seems shocked initially that the keys have a demonic nature, but the whole thing is quickly pushed aside. However, one has to wonder if the fact that they come from beyond the Black Door means the keys shouldn’t exist in the human world. Considering the Netflix series has been greenlit for season 3, it seems like something that might come up again.

Will this be important for ‘Locke & Key’ Season 3?

Despite the new episodes’ focus on the keys, the knowledge that they’re made from the same stuff as demons doesn’t come up again in Locke & Key Season 2. The Lockes are a bit preoccupied trying to stop Gabe and his new demon army.

With a throwaway comment about where the keys come from, fans have to wonder if this subject will come up again. Tyler (Connor Jessup) has already decided he doesn’t want to remember the magic of Keyhouse once he turns 18. And while it’s likely he’ll go back on that down the line, he could be onto something.

Is it possible the nature of the keys makes them prone to demon interference, even if the Lockes attempt to protect them? The series could push the siblings to the realization that the keys don’t belong in their world. After all, it’s repeatedly shown there’s a high price to pay for access to magic.

All episodes of Locke & Key Season 2 are currently streaming on Netflix.
