Netflix’s Inventing Anna – what is made up and and where Anna Delvey is now

Inventing Anna on Netflix is a wild saga of twists and turns that make it hard for us to tell the truth from fiction.

Following the rise and fall of New York City socialite Anna Delvey – real name Anna Sorokin – the limited series from Shonda Rhimes is based on a true story.

However, the show seems to take a lot of creative liberties to fill in the blanks of a tale filled with lies, cons and half-truths.

Here’s everything you need to know about the true crime drama, including how accurate it is as well as where Anna Delvey is now.

How accurate is Inventing Anna?

Inventing Anna – which is currently streaming on Netflix – has a disclaimer at the beginning of each episode which says: “This whole story is completely true. Except for all of the parts that are totally made up.” So it’s safe to say that the show is not completely true to real life and accurate.

Several characters on the show seem to be made up – one being Chase, Anna’s smooth-talking tech-bro boyfriend.

While Delvey did apparently date someone – who talked up the app he was developing while at fancy dinner parties with her – these are the only concrete details about the real mystery ex that Chase is based on.

Similarly, Anna’s original bestie Val seems to be the show’s take on art collector Michael Xufu Huang, who was one of Anna’s first connections in the elite art scene. Her mentor, Nora Radford, also appears to be created for the series.

Vivian Kent, the reporter in Inventing Anna, is not a real person either. But she is based on a real journalist, Jessica Pressler, who wrote the first journalistic deep dive into the bizarre case.

However, since Delvey’s fall from grace was so widely covered, the latter parts of Inventing Anna – including her trial – is based more on actual, reported facts.

Anna Sorokin was sentenced to four to 12 years in prison on one count of attempted grand larceny, three counts of grand larceny, and four counts of theft of services.

After serving her time in Albion Correctional Facility, she was released on parole in February 2021. However, six weeks after her release, Sorokin was placed in custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for overstaying her visa.

According to an essay penned by the real Sorokin ahead of Inventing Anna's premiere, she is now in Orange County Correctional Facility based on the grounds that she is "a continuous danger to the community".

Sorokin also revealed that the money she received from Netflix for the series was partly used to pay back her victims. She is also on Instagram and Twitter, with the accounts being created in the weeks between her release and being held in custody by ICE.
