The British television sitcom created and written by John Sullivan is as popular now as it was when it first aired in 1981. Only Fools and Horses had seven series and 16 Christmas specials until 2003. And there were big plans for its 30 anniversary which would’ve seen Del Boy (played by Sir David Jason) celebrate his retirement after he and Rodney Trotter (Nicholas Lyndhurst) became millionaires.
The cockney wheeler-dealer was set to toast his fortune with a one-off anniversary special.
It came after he and Rodney became millionaires after a pocked watch they found fetched a whopping £6.2million at auction.
Following their good fortune, they were going to be seen enjoying life to the max but plans changed.
Sadly, writer John died before he could complete the script – which was apparently very nearly finished.
It comes after the actor who played Del’s nemesis Boycie (John Challis) revealed what was meant to having in the final episode.
He said: “The 30th anniversary was coming up and John was in the process of getting together a Christmas special or something.
“It was going to be Del Boy’s 65th birthday, he was going to retire and there was going to be a bit of a get-together in the Nag’s Head.
“But unfortunately, he (John) got ill and didn’t come out of it,” John explained to The Sun.
“It was a complete shock to everybody. We got a phone call from the producers giving us the bad news.”
John, who also write Citizen Smith and Just Good Friends died in April 2011.
He was aged 64 and had been battling viral pneumonia.
Last year, there were rumours the cast could reunite for a reboot and the lead actor broke his silence on a Del Boy return.

He said: “It’s a team effort, and it’s not just the character of Del and Rodney, and Uncle Albert, or Grandad, as it were.
“But it was all the other peripheral characters, you know, Boycie, Marlene and all of those, how beautifully played they all were.
“You’re hard-pressed to replace all those characters who have endeared themselves into the heart of your audience today.
“So it would be a very dangerous journey to take – so my answer to that is, don’t try,” he told Digital Spy.
It comes after the actor spoke about his dislike for the car he always used to drive on set.
The yellow car was a fundamental part of the show as it helped the brothers with their mostly fruitless business ventures.
Inscribed on the side of the yellow car was the tagline: “Trotters Independent Traders” and Jason called the car “hell on three wheels”.
