The next season of Starz’ popular adaptation of Diana Gabaldon’s historical saga will pick up with Claire (played by Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) still defending their home from the American Revolution. Unfortunately, a new season of Outlander coming next year means even more challenges for Fraser’s Ridge.

Series lead Caitriona Balfe has been sharing more details for the upcoming sixth season of Outlander.

The time-travel drama will return for a shortened outing of eight episodes in March, though thankfully a full-length seventh instalment has also been confirmed.

Although the next season won’t have quite as much content as the previous year’s, Caitriona has assured fans the next episodes will live up to Outlander’s high standards.

“It’s a truncated season,” she told Deadline. “We are only doing eight episodes, but a lot of stuff happens.”

“And it’s pretty heavy going, some of it. But I think it’s going to be really good.”

Caitriona admitted she hadn’t had the chance to see the whole season yet but was already getting a good feeling from the upcoming premiere.

“I mean, I’ve only seen one episode,” she continued.

“So I’m not sure, because I haven’t seen them all.”

However, viewers already know the stakes will be higher than ever after where season five left the Frasers when Outlander was last on screens.

With Claire’s daughter Brianna (Sophie Skelton) and her husband Roger (Richard Rankin) still adjusting to life in the past, some new arrivals could threaten the balance of their new home.

“We do have new arrivals, the Christies,” the star explained.

“And their arrival and their story definitely interweaves with Claire’s journey. And it’s really great, tough stuff this season.”

Newcomers to the series Jessica Reynolds, Mark Lewis Jones and Alexander Vlahos will be joining the cast of season six as the mysterious Christie family.

Based on author Diana’s sixth book in the original series, A Breath of Snow and Ashes, readers will already know some of the tragedies set to befell Fraser’s Ridge in the next season.

For those not in the know, details are being kept under wraps ahead of the highly anticipated opening episode.

Until then, Caitriona has shed more light on what fans can expect to see in the next slate of episodes once ‘Droughtlander’ finally comes to an end.

“We play stylistically with how things look for different episodes,” she teased.

“Which is also really interesting. I love when we do that.

“But I think it’s going to be a good one. I feel proud of the work we were able to do this season. At least I hope it looks as good as it felt.”

It’s been a longer wait than usual for Outlander to return to screens, but thankfully the wait for the next chapter of Claire and Jamie’s story is almost over.

Outlander season six premieres Sunday, March 6 on Starz and STARZPLAY.
