TLC’s Sister Wives has has caused a lot of controversy over the years. While the Brown family, which includes patriarch Kody Brown and his four wives, Meri, Janelle, Christine and Robyn, have continually defended polygamy and the lives they lead on their TV show, many have still found fault with the practice. Recently, Christine Brown announced that she is splitting from her husband. And while some fans are shocked, Christine Brown’s aunt has spoken up, stating that she isn’t surprised at all about her niece’s decision.
Christine Brown recently announced that she is leaving Kody Brown
In early November 2021, Christine Brown announced in a statement that she was splitting from her partner, Kody Brown, after more than 27 years together. As reported by E! Online, Brown’s statement made note of the fact that she and her husband have “grown apart” and that she had to make the “difficult decision to leave.” The two were never legally married, E! Online noted, although she was considered to be Kody Brown’s third wife. The two share six children.
“We will continue to be a strong presence in each other’s lives as we parent our beautiful children and support our wonderful family,” Christine said in her statement.
The gradual dissolution of Kody and Christine’s marriage has been documented on the show, with viewers able to see how upset Christine has been over several recent decisions. As for Brown’s relatives, one outspoken aunt has declared that the split is absolutely not a surprise to her.
What did Christine Brown’s aunt say about her split from Kody?
Christine Brown’s aunt, Kristyn Decker, who is a former polygamist and outspoken advocate against the plural marriage system, recently revealed on a podcast that she isn’t surprised by Kody and Christine Brown’s separation.
“I could see it coming,” Decker said, as reported by E! Online. “I don’t think Christine’s been genuinely, what I call genuinely, happy since day one. Just from my own experiences … I think that as soon as another wife comes into the family, the whole dynamics change. The marriage is never going to be the same … I’m not sure [you can] even call it a marriage.”
Christine Brown and Decker are estranged, and the two do not have any contact, as she noted on the podcast. Still, Decker has not been shy about her opinion of the Brown family, and of polygamy in general. In fact, she opened up in a 2019 interview, slamming the practice of plural marriage as being “cult” like.
Christine Brown’s aunt called Kody religion a ‘cult system’
Decker has her own traumatic experiences with fundamentalist Mormon sect known as the Apostolic United Brethren (AUB) and polygamy, and therefore, she hasn’t hesitated to call out plural marriage whenever she can. In a 2019 interview, Decker called polygamy “a cult system.”
She went on to say, “The men will be the leaders. The men are the ones who bring the women to heaven if they qualify. The final decisions are with the men. If any of those women wanted to have another man, they couldn’t. It’s not an equality or equal system.”
These days, Decker is in a monogamous marriage and runs the Sound Choices Coalition, a nonprofit organization that helps people escape polygamist groups. While she currently isn’t communicating with her niece, Christine Brown, it is possible that the split news could serve to reunite the two.
