Strictly Come Dancing’s Amanda Abbington ‘quits’ series after missing show

Amanda Abbington shuts down feud rumours with Gio and says they ‘laugh a lot’

Amanda Abbington has reportedly quit Strictly Come Dancing after missing last week’s show for “medical reasons”.

Rumours about the Sherlock actress potentially calling it a day on the show have been swirling ever since Amanda was forced to pull out of last weekend’s live show alongside her dance partner Giovanni Pernice.

Host Claudia Winkleman told BBC viewers on Saturday night: “Now as you may have noticed, Amanda and Giovanni are missing from the lineup.

“Due to medical reasons Amanda is unable to perform this week.”

Fellow presenter Tess Daly continued: “As per the rules of the competition she has been given a bye and all being well will return to the ballroom next weekend.”

However, The Daily Star has now reported that the 49-year-old has decided to quit the show, while Express.co.uk has contacted the BBC for comment.

Speaking to The Daily Star, a source claimed: “The schedule is very gruelling and after a series of setbacks on the show she has simply decided, with regret, that it’s the right thing to do.”

While she didn’t address a reason for her absence from last week’s show, the Sherlock star did re-post a quote to her 119,000 followers.

It featured an image of late comedian Robin Williams, along with the quote: “People don’t fake depression… they fake being okay. Remember that. Be kind.”

Rumours that Amanda and Giovanni haven’t been getting along have also been making headlines recently, claims which the pair have strongly denied.

Appearing on Strictly spin-off show It Takes Two last week, host Janette Manrara probed: “It honestly looks like you two are having the best time in rehearsals, getting along like a house on fire in rehearsals right?”

Amanda agreed: “Yeah we are, we are! We do and we laugh a lot, we have the same sense of humour which is really important. So we’ll come out, work hard, and then we just laugh, don’t we?”

When contacted over the weekend by Express.co.uk, a Strictly Come Dancing spokesperson had no further update on the original statement issued regarding Amanda’s absence.

However, a source said: “The health and well-being of everyone involved in Strictly is production’s absolute priority.”

Despite Amanda’s absence, Giovanni still appeared on Saturday night’s show and was all smiles.

This couple had been set to perform a Cha Cha Cha to the song Canned Heat by Jamiroquai.

Strictly Come Dancing continues on Saturday at 6.40pm on BBC One.
