Taking the Glitterball trophy home in 2016, Strictly Come Dancing professional Joanne Clifton has revealed what the rehearsal process was like to be a ballroom champion. Currently appearing as Morticia Addams in The Addams Family musical, the star has disclosed to fans what goes on in the dance studio.

Despite dedicating the early part of her performing career to the strict world of Ballroom and Latin, Joanne has had a very successful musical theatre career.

Her hard work and dedication paid off when she won the BBC dancing competition in 2016 with celebrity partner Ore Oduba and won the 2015 Christmas Special with McFly’s Harry Judd.

Speaking exclusively with Express.co.uk, the 38-year-old shared how she didn’t miss a step when she swapped Strictly for musical theatre.

Recounting her time on the show, she said: “I mean Strictly is full-on, you literally have four days to come up with the choreography, to teach the steps, and then teach the performance and storytelling on top of it.

“I am not going to lie, Strictly is hard work for the professionals; they work so hard.”

Speaking fondly about her time on the show, she highlighted that the hard work ethic needed to be an athlete on Strictly has helped her gain career success.

Now, showing off not only her dancing skills but showcasing her singing and acting talents, she added: “Where in a musical, you either get two or three weeks of rehearsals, and you get the script in advance so that you can learn the script beforehand.

“Then you go through the rehearsal process, and I think it is a little bit more chilled. Once it is set and blocked and everything, that’s it, then you get your days free.

“Where on Strictly you have no days free, you have no time free; there is no time to do anything.”

The star has previously revealed she got to play her dream role of Dale Tremont in a production of Top Hat and would return to Strictly to dance with a royal.

The Addams Family is receiving great reviews, with the tour still on the road until June this year.

Joanne shared a lot of the show’s great onstage humour is down to the cast getting on so well off stage.

She described: “I think working with the people who are in the cast; they are naturally funny off stage, so when you get on stage it’s like always different, every night is different.

“Especially Cameron Blakely, who plays Gomez Addams. Honestly, I can’t deal with him at all – he is just so funny on stage and off stage.

“I am just having the time of my life, really.”

During the pandemic, there was little to no theatre, and on returning to the stage, she added: “I mean, there is no word that can really describe it.

“It’s so emotional; you just realise how much you missed it and how much you have worked hard for something.”

Before joining everyone’s favourite kooky family, Joanne appeared in The Rocky Horror Show and Flashdance musicals.

Joanne hasn’t turned her back on her purely dance background, having also appeared as an expert presenter on Strictly Come Dancing: It Takes Two in 2015 and 2019.

Opening up on whether she would return to the BBC show either as a dancer or judge, she ended on: “I definitely know for 1000 percent my passion and heart are on the stage right now. I am so happy doing what I am doing.

“I’d love to be a judge, but obviously, that takes away Saturday nights and Saturday nights are always really good in theatre, so it would be a difficult decision.”

The Addams Family UK tour is currently booking tickets up until June 2022.
