Good Morning Britain hosts Susanna Reid and Richard Madeley called out Will Smith as they discussed his altercation with Chris Rock at the 93rd annual Oscar Awards.

Comedian Chris Rock took to the stage and began citing jokes as he entertained the crowd and made a “G.I. Jane joke” about Jada Pinkett-Smith, Will Smith’s wife.

Actress Demi Moore shaved her head for the role, which made the comment particularly offensive as Jada suffers from alopecia.

Will took to the stage and attacked Chris before he returned to his seat and shouted at Rock to “keep his wife’s name out of his mouth”.

Good Morning Britain showed a live broadcast of the event and cut to a shot of the red carpet to show Will, Jada and their kids as they posed for the cameras.

Will clutched his first ever Oscars award, for which he won Best Actor for his role in the biopic film King Richard, as the paparazzi snapped pictures of the star.

Richard said that GMB viewers were very vocal about the incident and that the show had received calls from fans, which seemed to result in a 50/50 divide in opinion.

Madeley noted that GMB had received “more response from women than men” and read out some of the messages.

One said that he should be “stripped of his Oscar” while another thought it was “totally understandable”.

A viewer came to Will’s defence and said they “couldn’t love Will Smith more” due to their personal experience with alopecia.

Richard then asked Susanna whether she would have the same reaction to the smack if it had been Jada hitting Chris.

She announced that she was “very clear” where she stands on the matter, saying: "I don't think anyone should be smacking anyone!

"I don't know if I have made this clear enough…I just want to make it clear for the third time, I don't think it is okay, unless someone is in physical danger and requires saving, it's not okay to slap somebody."

Susanna later added: "There is absolutely no justification for hitting somebody and that is no way to diminish the pain when they have a condition like alopecia. I think it’s quite noticeable how stressed Jada is while Will Smith is clearly fronting it out.”

Susanna noted how Jada held herself as she would “normally be smiling and celebrating,” a stark difference to her apparent discomfort on the carpet.

Reid sympathised and said that it had been a “tough night” for the star, while Richard recalled that she looked “mortified” as Chris Rock made the insensitive remark, which was a “horrible thing to say”.

He then called for a change in the industry and said that those types of comments can be put down to saying “that’s what happens at these ceremonies,” but “perhaps they shouldn’t”.

Richard concluded: “He read the room wrong and he certainly read his target wrong.”
