The North Water was released on BBC Two in September 2021 and on AMC+ in the USA in July. Viewers immediately loved the series for its portrayal of the harsh life of 1800s whalers. The mystery drama was originally conceived as a mini-series, but fans have been calling for more episodes since season one ended. Express.co.uk has all the details on a second season.

What is The North Water about?

Adapted from the best-selling novel of the same name by Ian McGuire, the 1850s sailing drama was a success with both viewers and critics alike.

The story follows Patrick Sumner (played by Jack O’Connell), a disgraced ex-army surgeon who signs up as a ship’s doctor on a whaling expedition.

This voyage takes Patrick up into the Arctic where he meets Henry Drax (Colin Farrell), the harpooner, who is a harsh and amoral killer.

Summer finds he is stuck with this psychopath for a voyage that will last months, if not years, testing him both mentally and physically in a battle for survival.

Will there be a second season of The North Water?

When the series was first announced, it was billed as a mini-series, which usually implies it will be a self-contained story.

Indeed, the story did wrap up its main threads, but since the premiere, the show has only gone on to build in popularity.

Due to the commercial and critical reception, fans have called for a continuation of the story and for the show to receive a second season.

However, since the release of the series, the BBC has not commented on the future of the show.

There has been no word on production commencing on the show again either, with both O’Connell and Farrell currently working on different projects.

O’Connell is currently filming a new mini-series – SAS: Rogue Heroes.

This is based on the Ben Macintyre book of the same name and charts the creation of the famed Special Forces Unit.

Farrell on the other hand has numerous projects in development, though only one is currently filming.

Meanwhile, many fans are anticipating his portrayal of The Penguin in Matt Reeve’s The Batman, which has finally wrapped filming.

Instead, Farrell is filming The Banshees of Inisherin, the new film from Martin McDonagh, the filmmaker behind In Bruges and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

His latest film will follow a pair of lifelong friends during an awkward time in their relationship when one no longer wants to be friends with the other.

This will see Farrell and Brendan Gleeson work together again in a McDonagh film, echoing the cult classic In Bruges.

This all puts the likelihood of a continuation of The North Water in doubt, as it would only be able to begin production once the stars and production team are available again.

As for the plot, a lot of the backstories of the characters were left unexplained, leading some fans to believe there could be room for a prequel or flashbacks.

It is all baseless speculation for now, as there has been no word from anyone involved that a second season will ever happen.

Express.co.uk will update this story once news of season two emerges.

The North Water is available to watch on BBC iPlayer in the UK and AMC+ in the USA
