'This Is Us' Season 6: Justin Hartley Says Finale Goes '10 or 12' Years Into the Future

NBC’s This Is Us Season 6 finale wraps up the show completely, and fans can’t wait to see what’s in store for the end of the Pearson family saga. This Is Us Season 6 Episode 16 featured the Pearsons coming together and making decisions on Rebecca’s caretaking. And the penultimate episode likely features Rebecca’s death. Here’s what Kevin actor Justin Hartley said about the finale going “10 or 12” years into the future.

What happens at the end of ‘This Is Us’? Viewers likely see the aftermath of Rebecca’s death

What can fans expect out of the This Is Us Season 6 finale? The cast and crew from the show continue to hype up what’s to come on social media, though it’s still uncertain exactly what fans will see.

The penultimate episode, “The Train,” will likely feature Rebecca’s death, as the end of “Family Meeting” shows the Pearsons alerting each other of Rebecca’s failing health. It’s possible “The Train” will show Rebecca falling in out of consciousness (and likely remembering her father taking her on a train as a little girl). The finale, titled “Us,” will likely take fans into the future beyond Rebecca’s death.

The penultimate episode might be the most devastating of the season. Mandy Moore said she threw up after reading the script for “The Train,” which likely means her character dies. That leaves another episode to explore the Pearsons in the future.

Justin Hartley says the ‘This Is Us’ Season 6 finale goes a decade into the future

Kevin Pearson actor Justin Hartley spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the This Is Us Season 6 finale. He confirmed to the publication that the finale takes a look into the Pearson family’s future. “I think we go 10 or 12 years in the future,” he said. “Something like that. But we talk about the future after that and what comes next. That’s a cool part of it.”

As for reading the finale script, Hartley noted he’s glad the show doesn’t end on “such a sad note,” especially with Rebecca’s death looming. “I thought it was not about what’s happening now, necessarily, but what’s in store for the future,” he added. “Where these three are going and the tools that they have to help them navigate throughout all for the trials and tribulations that might come their way.”

Executive producer Isaac Aptaker also hinted at a future look into the Big Three’s lives. “It’s an episode that really sets the stage for where the Big Three wound up and where we’ll leave them at the end of this series, and how different that is from where they were when we met them in our pilot,” he told Entertainment Weekly about episode 16, “Family Meeting.”

Could a movie spinoff be in the works?

With the This Is Us Season 6 finale looming, could a movie be in the works? Creator Dan Fogelman admitted he had an idea for a film, but he gave up.

It had six or seven people born on the same day, and then the twist at the end was going to be that they were all related to the Jack and Rebecca characters,” Fogelman told The Hollywood Reporter. “But 80 pages in, I was like, ‘I don’t think this holds.’ So, I gave up and put it away for a while.”

While a movie likely won’t happen, Fogelman thinks the show will live on as a timeless classic. “I believe the show will remain timeless,” he added. “It’s what makes me feel OK about doing six seasons and ending it.”

This Is Us Season 6 airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. EST on NBC.
