Democrats who control the state Assembly are holding an emergency meeting Tuesday afternoon to discuss the bombshell state investigative report that found Gov. Andrew Cuomo “sexually harassed multiple women”, retaliated against accusers and created a “toxic” workplace.
The Assembly’s Judiciary Committee is currently conducting an impeachment probe of Cuomo, and the explosive findings by state Attorney General Letitia James’ report could accelerate action to remove Cuomo, a three-term Democratic incumbent. The panel is scheduled to meet next Monday.
“The findings contained in the report are disturbing. The details provided by the victims are gut-wrenching. Our hearts go out to all the individuals who have had to endure this horrible experience,” said Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie (D-Bronx).
“The conduct by the Governor outlined in this report would indicate someone who is not fit for office. We will have more to say in the very near future.”
Heastie’s comments spell bad news for Cuomo’s ability to survive in office. Heastie, a former Bronx Democratic Party chairman, has long been considered a key Cuomo ally.
“We’re having a 2 p.m. Assembly conference,” said Assemblyman Tom Abinanti (D-Tarrytown), a member of the Judiciary Committee.
“We’ve heard from the attorney general and Assembly members are concerned with the findings.”
Aside from the sexual harassment claims, the Assembly is probing Cuomo’s handling of nursing homes during the coronavirus pandemic, allegations that he used state resources as part of his $5.1 million COVID-19 book deal, among other issues.
“These are also serious issues,” Abinanti said.
