At least a dozen people were killed and nearly 140 others injured when a gas line exploded in central China Sunday.

The blast ripped through a crowded section of Shiyan around 6:30 a.m. local time, reducing several buildings to rubble near a vegetable market packed with shoppers, Beijing News said in a report.

“I heard a loud bang and immediately ducked under the table, thinking it was an earthquake,” one eyewitness told the outlet.

Shocking images from the scene show workers frantically sifting through the rubble in hopes of finding more survivors.

Authorities have plucked 138 people from the scene, including 37 with serious injuries, according to a report by CNN.

Other images showed neighboring buildings with charred walls and shattered windows.

The Chinese Ministry of Emergency Management has also dispatched a crew to help with the search and rescue operation, Beijing News said.

Investigators are probing the cause of the deadly explosion.
