An Australian woman has offered an insight into how difficult it can be travelling as a ‘fat person’.
TikTok star Ali Smith posted her journey to Bali, showing everything from how she has to dress on flights through to the space for tray tables.
She also offered helpful tips, including which taxi company to use and how to deal with local vendors.
‘You need to dress in compressive activewear. I could hardly breathe,’ Ali said.
‘Then you debate whether to ask for a seat belt extender, could this be fixed by me not being so big? Absolutely. Would it make for an entertaining video? Not so much.’

The TikTok star regularly posts videos recommending workouts and tips for getting around while ‘plus size’.
Ali and a group of friends booked flights to Bali, noting there were different things to consider.
‘I felt too self-conscious to ask for a seat belt extender, but after a little hustle and bustle, I made it fit,’ she said, showing her strapped in her Jetstar seat.
‘I thought I was going to amputate my legs, but I got there in the end.’
She then noted the airline’s tray table, which she could fold down without any issue.
‘I was not expecting to be able to use my tray table, but in the end it was OK,’ the TikToker said.
Ali then showed how she sits cross-armed, so she doesn’t take up armrest space from other flyers.
‘I am thoughtful, and I decided this is the only way,’ she added.

She and her male friend booked aisle and window seats on the same row, but no one ended up sitting between the pair, so Ali was able to spread out.
In another video, she expanded on her experience and offered further tips for her ‘plus size’ friends.
‘You can ask for a seat belt extender while you’re checking in, so you don’t have to ask in front of other people,’ Ali noted.
‘I also suggest taking a hoodie or wearing a hoodie, so you have something to hold onto if you fold your arms.’
The Queenslander said Bali’s Blue Bird taxi company offered vehicles with seven seats, which made it much easier to get around.
She told people to be wary of the knock-off company Blue Biro.
‘If you’re travelling with a group like we were, the driver will put down the seats, which will make it easier for everyone,’ the Aussie woman said.
Kmart underpants were also a strong recommendation for dealing with the Balinese heat, and she also urged people not to be offended if shop owners on the street are yelling, ‘I have your size’.
‘Just remember, they’re trying to do their job and sell their clothes,’ she said.
‘What I like to do is ask them, “what’s my size?” and they’ll say XXS. Then, we’ll both laugh, and I’ll move on.’

Several Jetstar staffers responded to the video, all urging her they are trained to deal with sensitive situations.
‘As a Jetstar cabin crew, please don’t be embarrassed to ask, we would kindly hand you an extension seatbelt,’ a flight attendant said.
‘As Jetstar crew please do not hesitate in asking for an extension seatbelt, there is absolutely no shame in it and we are more than happy to help,’ another airline worker said.
