Football fans are set to spend £400m on beer and BBQ food as the Euros start on the hottest weekend of the year

  • Households to enjoy beer and BBQs for Euros on the hottest weekend of the year
  • Supermarkets are expecting bumper sales of beer, sausages, burgers and pizza
  • There are concerns Covid-19 restrictions could dampen the atmosphere in pubs

The start of the Euros on the hottest weekend of the year is set to kick off a £400million party for millions of Britons.

As temperatures soar into the 80s Fahrenheit, households will enjoy a beer by the barbecue before gathering round supersize TVs to watch the big matches.

The feelgood factor reaches across England, Scotland and Wales, with all three nations qualifying for a major football tournament for the first time since 1958.

Supermarkets are expecting bumper sales of beer, BBQ food, sausages, burgers and pizza as fans watching at home spend an estimated £334million.

That includes £189million on food, £108million on drink, £17million on themed merchandise and £20million on last-minute purchases of televisions, said the Centre for Retail Research.

An estimated 5.1million supporters are forecast to spend another £63million catching the action in pubs and sports bars.

Football tournaments have long been crucial to the sector but this time the number of punters will be limited by social distancing and the rule of six inside.

Venues also have to operate a table service and customers cannot stand at the bar or to watch matches.

There are concerns the restrictions could dampen the atmosphere. Research for the British Beer & Pubs Association found 85 per cent of fans fear they will ruin watching Euros at pubs this summer.

There has also been a surge in searches for TV package deals and discounts in the last two weeks, said VoucherCodes.co.uk.
