It’s an all-too-familiar scene in Britain’s pubs – the moment when the reveller due to get the drinks in mysteriously disappears.

Research now suggests they may be likely to come from the North East, with figures showing that Geordies are the nation’s biggest round-dodgers.

A shocking 37 per cent of people from Newcastle admitted they come up with an excuse to leave the pub or go to the loo when it is their turn at the bar.

Cities most likely to avoid buying their round in the pub 

Newcastle – 37 per cent

Leicester – 34 per cent

London – 33 per cent

Birmingham – 29 per cent

Cardiff – 28 per cent

Leeds – 27 per cent

Cambridge – 24 per cent

Belfast – 24 per cent

Brighton – 22 per cent

Plymouth – 19 per cent

Shamefully, in fact, they are almost twice as tight as those from Plymouth, who set the standard as the most honest about getting their round in and paying what they owe.

Just 19 per cent in the Devon city own up to pulling a fast one with friends and family to save cash in their local.

Leicester pub-goers are the second-tightest folk, with 34 per cent admitting they have a knack for making themselves scarce to avoid having to pay for their round.

London came third, with 33 per cent having an aversion to the bar.

Birmingham was fourth on 29 per cent, Cardiff fifth on 28 per cent and Leeds sixth on 27 per cent.

Belfast and Cambridge quaffers came joint seventh on 24 per cent, with Brighton ninth on 22 per cent. 

To come up with the findings, the financial firm Capital One asked 1,500 adults if they dodged paying bills.

Spokeswoman Katy Lomax said: ‘Confidence and knowledge is key to good money management, so while it may be tricky to talk to friends and family about finances, it’s better to be up front and open.’
