Irishman sprayed in face with date rape drug 'Devil's Breath' and forced to empty bank account by woman in Tenerife

AN IRISHMAN was sprayed in the face with a date rape drug before being forced to empty his bank account in Tenerife.

David Nelson, 27, was on his way back to his apartment after enjoying drinks in Playa de las Americas when the robbery happened last March.

David, from Bray, Co Wicklow, was approached by a woman who he claimed was trying to seduce him.

After he pushed her away she sprayed him in the face with a substance which was later found to be a date rape drug called "Devil's Breath."

He told the Irish Independent: "I remember very few things after being sprayed.

"My phone was taken, gold watch, bracelet, €600 from my wallet and I was then taken to a ATM and the girl proceeded to take what money she could from my Irish and Swiss bank accounts until the cards declined. This drug turns you into a zombie.

DRUG WARNING

"I had never heard of this drug before as I'm sure many others haven't either.

"Even on the first night of my trip a man pursued me and was very persistent that me and my friend smell the weed that he was trying to sell.

"It wasn't until after what happened on me that I realise he may have been getting me to try inhale the smell that comes from Devil's Breath."

A number of warnings have been issued about the drug – also known as scopolamine.

A Belgian man died in nearby Canary Island Gran Canaria in 2015 after being given the drug as part of an attempt to rob him and his friend.

A report from the Spanish Association of Toxicology stated: "It is confirmed therefore the presence of this substance as a means of submission to commit a crime, giving rise to the first case of death by scopolamine in Spain."
