STUDENTS in New York State start their week-long, mid-winter break starting February 21.
This break is in addition to the week students were off for the Christmas and New Year's Eve celebrations from December 24 to December 31.
How long is winter break in New York?
Students attending New York school systems have the week of February 21 through February 25 off from school, a holiday vacation that stems from financial reasons.
During the New York fiscal crisis in 1977, lines at the gas pumps were long and energy was expensive thanks to the 1970s oil crisis.
It was ahead of the 1977-1978 school year that New York City's Board of Education decided to implement a one-week, mid-winter vacation in February that would allow schools to shut off their electricity for a week and save the trouble of waiting in long gas lines for transportation.
While the number of days students were in school didn't change, the New York City Board of Education found other days during the year to switch out to allocate for days off in February.

The week off in February was permanently implemented in the school year calendar in 1991 as part of an agreement between the teacher's union and the Board of Education.
A budget-cutting deal was made with the teacher's union when the Board of Education announced salary cutbacks to avoid laying off teachers.
The decision to use the week off in February and an added one-week sabbatical right before retirement to offset the salary cutbacks was met with resistance and anger at the time.
Budgets needed to be cut back by $90million to save jobs, meaning New York City teachers' salaries were reduced to what they would make in 4.5 days, The New York Times reported in 1991.
When is the next school break?
New York students will get their next break from school in April for Spring recess.
The break will take place from April 15 to April 22 and will include Good Friday and Passover.
What are the school holidays for 2022?
The New York holidays for the remainder of the 2022 schoolyear are:
February 21-25: Mid-Winter Break
April 15-April 22: Spring Break
May 2: Eid al-Fitr
May 30: Memorial Day
