TfL bosses ban advert for new West End play because it features cake

Now CAKE is cancelled: Killjoy TfL bosses ban advert for new West End play because it features a two-tier Victoria sponge that ‘promotes’ obesity

  • Transport for London said it promotes ‘consumption of high fat, salt and sugar’
  • Show producers of Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding were forced to spend £5K on new ads

Transport for London bosses have banned an advert for a new play in the West End because it features a Victoria sponge cake.

Ahead of its opening night next Saturday, producers for the Broadway show Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding created a poster featuring the two main characters standing on top of a two-tier Victoria Sponge wedding cake.

They reportedly spent close to £20,000 on their marketing campaign and printed 200 posters promoting their actors Ronnie Burden and Alabama Boatman, The Sun reported.

However, TfL bosses decided to take down the ad as it promotes ‘the consumption of high fat, salt and sugar foods’ and breaches their strict obesity guidelines.

Despite appealing against the decision to ban the posters, the show’s producers were forced to spend another £5,000 on a new ad campaign where the cake was removed.

Social media users were furious with decision as some blasted it as being an example of ‘nanny state censorship’ while another said it is utterly ‘silly’.

A TfL spokesman said: ‘We welcome all advertising that complies with our published guidance.’

Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding was first created in 1984 and uniquely features an interactive theatre experience that puts you right in the middle of a traditional Italian-American wedding.

The original idea for the show was created at Hofstra University when Mark Nasser (the original Tony n’ Tina) and Nancy Cassaro were both undergraduates.

Both in the drama department and graduates of the 1981 class, they made up these characters and would often improv with each other, acting out the roles of two Italian wed-to-be people from Queens, New York, just for fun.

The show is also being performed at the top of the ArcelorMittal Orbit in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic park next to the London Stadium in Stratford.

MailOnline has contacted Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding for comment.
