‘Victoria is a powder keg’: Experts fear virus still circulating as testing rate drops

Coronavirus is still smouldering away in Victoria, infectious diseases experts suspect, as plummeting testing numbers fuel fears of undetected cases circulating in the community.

Melbourne infectious diseases physician Michelle Ananda-Rajah said until vaccine uptake rose substantially, testing remained the most critical measure in Victoria alongside contact tracing to avoid another mass outbreak, but she feared “coronavirus fatigue” was leading to a drop in testing numbers.

A man who visited Bondi Junction Westfield last weekend has tested positive to COVID-19.

He returned a positive saliva test on Tuesday and his infection was confirmed by a second PCR test on Wednesday.

A second case was confirmed in a household contact on Wednesday night.

“NSW Health has been notified that a household contact of a locally acquired case reported earlier this evening has also tested positive, and further venues of concern have been identified,” health authorities said.

Investigations into the source of the initial locally-acquired case and contact tracing began earlier in the day.

“Urgent investigations into the source of the infection and contact tracing are under way, as is genome sequencing,” NSW Health said in a statement on Wednesday afternoon.

A number of locations visited by the man in Sydney’s east were identified as potential exposure sites, including a screening of the Salma Hayek and Ryan Reynolds movie, The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard, at Bondi Junction on Sunday and shops within the Westfield complex visited on both days of the weekend.

Good morning

Good morning, and welcome to the last day before restrictions ease again, as of 11.59pm tonight.

I know I’m looking forward to being able to go for a walk down the beach without a mask on. And catching up with friends indoors – let’s face it, Melbourne’s weather hasn’t exactly been supportive of outside gatherings!

We’ll be bringing you all the latest coronavirus news today, and over at the national blog my colleague Broede Carmody will be across everything else that’s going on, go say hi if you can.

Let’s get into it.
