Every season, one hair color trend tends to stand out above the rest as the shade of the season. This time last year, anyone bold enough to go pink did, but this winter, you’re going to see a spike in the coppery-red hue called “rust.” It’s bright, but muted; icy, but warm — and it’s going to be a huge trend in 2021.

“We’ll see a lot more redheads across the board — ginger reds, deep reds, cool- and warm-redheads — all in the new year,” said Graham Nation, Unite ambassador and celebrity stylist. Make no mistake, an uptick in red hair in the fall and wintertime isn’t groundbreaking, but this is no ordinary red. As seen on celebrities like Ariel Winter, Nicole Kidman, Sophie Turner, and Julianne Hough, “rust” blends orange and red shades with a slightly softer finish for a fun twist on an old classic.

“In the winter you always want to go richer and deeper because you lose your tan in a sense; so you add the color into your hair instead,” Edward Tricomi, celebrity hairstylist and co-founder of Warren Tricomi Salons, told POPSUGAR. “Any [colors] that mimic nature are the colors that you want to go with for fall and winter.”
