British acting legend looks unrecognisable in new biopic as fans left in shock

BAFTAs: Helen Mirren on tribute to the Queen

Helen Mirren appears virtually unrecognisable as Jewish Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir in the upcoming movie of the same first name.

In the trailer, the actress looks world’s away from her usual glamorous self sporting straggly grey hair, facial prosthetics, and a fatsuit to transform into the former politician.

The two-minute long clip shows the 78-year-old in action puffing on a cigarette multiple times and sparring with Liev Schreiber, who plays former US politician Henry Kissinger as the drama unfolds.

Following the release of the trailer today, fans have expressed their surprise at seeing the actress’ new character.

Twitter user My Name is Dawn wrote: “That’s Helen Mirren?! Holy Smokes, excellent makeup, costuming and the sets! I may go see this.”

Christian Hannah commented: “This is getting nominated for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. Like goddamn, that doesn’t look like Helen Mirren at all.”

“Oh, wow! Helen Mirren’s make up makes her look so much like Mrs. Meir! This one I want to see,” added Roslyn Curry.

Steven Sunn typed: “Golda… played by Helen… beyond cool!”

Helen takes on the story of the country’s first female Prime Minister in Guy Nattiv’s thriller based on true events set during the Yom Kippur War in 1973.

On taking on the part, the actress said: “She was a formidable, intransigent and powerful leader. I only hope I do her justice.”

News of the award-winning star taking on the character however was met with some criticism, due to her not being Jewish.

Coronation Street actress Maureen Lipman, who is Jewish, said of the casting: “Helen will be great.

“Good actress, sexy and intelligent. Looks the part. [But] my opinion, and that’s what it is, a mere opinion, is that if the character’s race, creed or gender drives or defines the portrayal then the correct – for want of an umbrella [term] – ethnicity should be a priority.”

Addressing the criticism, Helen told Deadline: “I’ve played many Jewish roles before, but Golda was so, so archetypal.

“So I can understand people saying, ‘Should this really happen?’ But you know, there we go. It’s a legitimate discussion, I think.

“I think it only happened with Golda, because she was such a powerful, archetypal character.”

Fans are already predicting that Helen will obtain another Oscar under her belt for the lead role.

@roberthayes7737 added: “Total Oscar bait, but it still looks incredible.”

The war drama will be released next month.
