Did you even live through the 1990s if you didn’t spend much of the decade watching Hugh Grant charm the knickers off his rom-com co-stars in hits such as Notting Hill and Love, Actually? Most recently, Grant took on a more menacing role in HBO’s The Undoing, portraying Jonathan Fraser, an affluent doctor accused of murder. Based on reports of Grant’s earnings, we’re guessing it did not take much method acting for Grant to put himself into Fraser’s designer loafers. If this sounds like a lot of dough, rest assured that Grant has made many Hollywood executives wealthy, too, since his flicks have brought in an estimated $3 billion worldwide, the outlet reported. The Brit earned $100,000 for his breakout performance in 1994’s Four Weddings and a Funeral, for which he won a Golden Globe (via IMDb). After clinching that award, his salary climbed to $7-10 million per film throughout the rest of that decade, and Grant raked in $12.5 million for Two Weeks’ Notice in 2002. But then, it all came crashing down around him in the years that followed, as the majority of his vehicles tanked (per CheatSheet).
Grant made a career comeback with 'The Undoing'
Riddled by sex scandals as well as poor box office performance, Hugh Grant is the first to concede that his fall from grace was his own fault. “I developed a bad attitude from about 2005 onwards,” the actor admitted to the LA Times. Then, Grant made what he called a “massive turkey” with actress Sarah Jessica Parker, the universally panned film Did You Hear About the Morgans?. “Whether I wanted to or not after that, the days of being a very well-paid leading man were suddenly gone overnight,” Grant revealed.
Fortunately, The Undoing was far from a turkey; in fact, the series, which also stars Nicole Kidman, garnered more views for HBO than any other program since the Big Little Lies finale aired in 2019 (per IndieWire). Grant’s career, and earning potential, seemingly revived as quickly as it tanked. While his income for this role has not been shared, Celebrity Net Worth estimates that the actor currently earns $10 million for feature films and half that amount for smaller engagements — not too far off his peak earnings from several decades ago.
And, some critics believe this series brings Grant’s 1990s charm full-circle. As GQ commented, “it’s thrilling to watch Grant play the sort of creep that only he could play, one that cashes in all the accumulated goodwill built up playing the achingly sincere nice guys.”
