If you prefer to clean your kettle regularly so that you have as less limescale as possible, then this could be a good method to use.

Simply fill the kettle the quarters of the way with some water and throw in a tablespoon full of bicarbonate of soda.

Boil the kettle and allow it to sit with the boiled water and bicarbonate of soda for an hour before pouring it out and rinsing it.

Finally, fill the kettle with water again and boil it so that you remove any bicarbonate of soda which might have been left there and avoid having your cuppa taste like it.

Using white vinegar

This method might make your kitchen a bit fumy, so be sure to open a window before starting this process.

However, it did prove to be one of the most effective methods on how to remove limescale from your kettle, and cheap too, so it's surely worth it.

If you have sensitive skin and want to remove the limescale from the spout with vinegar, be sure to wear gloves too because it can be irritant.

Fill half of the kettle with water and the other half with vinegar.

Boil the kettle and then pour the water out.

Boil the kettle with water again so that you remove any taste of vinegar.

This method might need to be repeated more than once to get limescale out of your kettle.

Descaler products

If you go to your local shop, you might find that there are ready-made products just for descaling your kettle.

These will come with instructions on how to clean your kettle and you can also find some cheap packets which will come in three or a whole pack for example.

Why is there limescale in my kettle?

Limescale is a chalky substance which is mostly found in rocks and shells.

It has an off-white colour but can also be grey, pink or reddish-brown.

It is mostly caused by hard water in kettles because it contains large amounts of calcium and magnesium.

If left in your kettle, it starts to form a flaky coat and will stick to the inside of it.

Hard water has a high mineral content and is mostly found in London and the southeast.

Water in areas such as Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and the southwest and northwest of England tend to have softer water, which is lower in its mineral content but has a higher sodium one.

The Midlands are in between and some areas tend to have harder water than others.

Is limescale in a kettle bad for me?

Limescale is not bad for you because it is a natural-occurring substance.

Tap water contains a great amount of limescale in it and that is why sometimes it does not taste as great in certain areas like London as when compared to others.
