Aldi UK has issued a warning to shoppers ahead of the busy Christmas period, that will affect more than 1,000 stores.

In line with previous years, the supermarket giant has confirmed it will be closing all stores on Boxing Day to enable staff to enjoy Christmas with their families.

The announcement has given customers 50 days notice that people will need to find alternative shopping arrangements if they were planning to head to the discount supermarket for groceries on the 26th.

It will shut its doors for the holidays on December 25 and 26, before reopening as usual on Wednesday 27 so customers can pick up their New Year essentials.

Opening hours are due to vary in the build-up to Christmas, with Aldi operating under extended times so people can stock up ahead of the big day.

Richard Thornton, Communications Director at Aldi UK, explained: ‘We recognise that Christmas is an important time for many of our colleagues, and keeping our stores closed on Boxing Day gives them more time to spend with their families.

‘Customers will have plenty to look forward to in the run-up to Christmas, with more of Aldi’s brand-new Christmas ranges arriving in stores over the next few weeks.

‘The supermarket also recently announced it is recruiting 3,000 store roles to bolster its team ahead of the festive period, with roles including Store Assistants, managerial positions and cleaners.’

He added that ‘Starting pay for Store Assistants at Aldi is an industry-leading £11.40 per hour nationally, and £12.85 per hour inside the M25.

‘Aldi also remains the only supermarket in the UK to offer paid breaks.’

It comes after the supermarket revealed their Christmas advert for 2023, where the iconic Kevin the Carrot returned for his eighth year as their mascot.

This time, the character was found touring William Conker’s Christmas factory with the likes of spoilt little sprout and greedy, gluttonous grape.

Narrated by acting legend Jim Broadbent in the style of a poem, the advert tells the story of Kevin’s trip to the factory alongside Grandpa Grate and four other competition winners, of course inspired by Willy Wonka.

The group are shown through Conker’s factory – which is filled with festive treats including a choux bun Christmas tree, a mince pie conveyor belt and a gravy river.

But while Kevin celebrates the giving nature of Christmas, other winners are more self-serving and end up in some sticky situations.

The advert competes with the likes of Lidl, M&S, Asda and Amazon to capture the hearts of Brits this year.

John Lewis finally joined the mix this morning by teasing its Christmas advert for the first time this year.

With just 10 seconds and five words, it’s left viewers eagerly waiting for what’s to come.
