Most recently, Dr. James detailed the five items you should avoid at all costs when shopping for your pets, starting with raw hide

Stop before you shop! The five things to never buy your pup

  • Raw hide
  • Nylabone
  • Soft toys
  • Small latex toys
  • Retractable leashes

He captioned the viral clip, which amassed over 1.4 million views, ‘Five things to avoid getting your dog at pet stores.’

The first item on his no-buy list is raw hide.

He explained that raw hide is one of the worst things to give your dog because it has Formaldehyde, which is highly toxic, and bleach in it.

‘It’s filled with Formaldehyde, it’s treated with bleach if they break it down they can choke on it, and it can cause a bowel obstruction,’ Dr. James said.

Next up on his list is the chew toy known as Nylabone.

The vet explained that while this dog bone shouldn’t be ingested, it’s flavored, or shaped like a ‘pretzel,’ which can cause issues.

The third item you should never purchase is any type of soft toy.

While Dr. James noted that teddy bear toys are adorable, they aren’t the best option when it comes to toys because they are ‘dangerous.’

He said that Nylabone and soft toys are dangerous for tour dogs because they can ingest small pieces

Keeping on the toy theme, Dr. James said that any ‘thin, small, latex’ toys should also be avoided at all costs unless you have a ‘Chihuahua’

Lastly, the vet said retractable leashes are ‘by far the worst product ever made for dogs’ because it’s far too thin

‘I love soft toys but they are dangerous,’ he said.

He explained that the squeaky part of the toy is an issue because dogs can easily tear the soft toy apart and then end up ingesting the squeaky part.

Keeping on the toy theme, Dr. James said that any ‘thin, small, latex’ toys should also be avoided at all costs unless you have a ‘Chihuahua.’

‘If your dog isn’t a two-pound Chihuahua or Maltese, [latex toys] are too small.

They can ingest it so don’t give it to them. It’s really thin, don’t give it to them,’ he explained.

Lastly, the vet said retractable leashes are ‘by far the worst product ever made for dogs.’

‘Nobody needs a 16-foot leash. You can’t control your dog, the leash is too thin, so no,’ he said at the end of his video.
